The Shrewsbury Arms which has fondly been referred to by locals for years as ‘The Shrew’ is an attractive redbrick and timber framed building on three storeys with jetties. It is now for sale and seeking an interested occupier who can bring it back into use and restore it to its former splendour.

The building was constructed around the turn of the 15th to 16th centuries and was possibly first used as a manor house. It has also been recorded as having once been owned by The Talbot family, who were the Earls of Shrewsbury, hence its earlier name ‘The Talbot Arms’. Whilst The Shrew has been added to and adapted over time, it retains a good number of original features and heaps of character which it shows off from its prominent corner location.

The former village pub ceased trading last year and was quickly boarded up. Consequently it attracted the attention of thieves who stripped the lead from the roof. Although we understand that some repairs were made to the building we are unaware of the extent of any possible wind or weather damage.

However, despite its current rundown appearance, the pub nonetheless remains an important historic feature in Albrighton and needs a new owner who will respect that history. Pevsner noted the pub in his Shropshire text, and mentionsits location opposite St Mary’s. The church is the oldest building in Albrighton with parts of its tower dating to the 12th-century whilst the Shrewsbury Arms is thought to be the second oldest.

An application for alterations and extensions to the pub was refused in 2005. No further applications have since been submitted. We would recommend that anybody interested in the building speaks first to a conservation officer to understand the constraints of the Grade II listed property as well as the planning department to understand what might be acceptable of the site which falls within a conservation area and is in the vicinity of other listed buildings.

The Shrewsbury Arms is located at the far end of the High Street in Albrighton which is itself situated between Wolverhampton and Telford.
