Sad. Some councillors can't see further than the end of their noses.

Atleast if they can see that far they're not in the worst 10% of Councillors. The response from the MP is disappointing if predictable. More dissappointing for me is the bias they've put in the article. For me these include:
A failure to define affordable housing. What an MP or property developer deems as affordable is not what someone else would.
Giving a lot more space to those pro it than against it, without suggesting what the concensus of opinion is. Of course the developers would be for it, so if they're going to write that little they could give us a response that might be of greater interest.
In this day and age the media has a strong hold on these things, and if the BBC is going all out to support the redevelopment it's certainly bad news.

Isn't affordable housing these part rent part buy type schemes that they say are in all new developments.

Basically it seems like spin to get it through planning, this was supposed to happen to Gunwharf in Portsmouth. A percentage of affordable housing was to be provided and was in the plans but never materialised in the finished build.

There is no point building another ASDA when one is so close. Do something imaginative with the site like have a good fun fair.

I have uploaded on YouTube a video of the Log Ride Water Chute for you all to enjoy.

Let's hope this rare ride is saved!

I have on-ride footage of the Jetstream and Pepsi Loop too...if you want me to put that up on YouTube please let me know...but the Chute is the ride that would be the saddest to lose.

I've finally got around to editing and sorting out youtubing an old(ish) cine film of a family_furie holiday at Rhyl.

If you look at the video, you'll see Rhyl is bloody busy. The family with us at the time came from Maidstone in Kent, and they travelled every year to Rhyl. I can't place the year exactly, but it's before I was ten, so I'd say around 1981 or so.

Video on Youtube:

Or a high def () version from http://www.badgered.me.uk/tpvideos/rhyl_furie.wmv (you'll have to wait a bit as it's uploading, make it Monday and you'll be fine getting it).

Filming is dreadful, I'm glad my Grandad never gave up his day job and became a camera man.

Also, look closely at the safety on the Scrambler and Ski Jump. No fences all the way around at all, and 5 in a car on the Ski Jump. These were the days before H&S :)

I don't know if people remember the BMX track on the sea front? I loved that! :)

Rhyl Ocean Beach Site Still Empty

Hello

I was at the Ocean Beach site on 16 June and the developers have done - - - exactly nothing. The site is still empty after nearly 2 years.

There is more about Ocean Beach at: http://northwestseasidetowns.t35.com/rhyl/

Here are some pictures.

Once again, thanks for the poignant, brilliant images Jim and the link to your great site is very much appreciated.

On 8th September 2006 themagiceye received an annonymous e mail. I came across it again recently:

"I cannot confirm whether or not it will be an ASDA superstore, but sadly, by 2007 the whole of the Ocean Beach funfair will have gone. This is due to Denbighshire County Council's "redevelopment" of Rhyl's seafront into what will generally be known as "Drift Park", which in turn is part of the Rhyl Going Forward scheme.

Although it mainly involves (as far as the seafront goes) development of gardens and water features, the funfair is not part of that scheme. Current proposals for the Ocean Beach site include housing, A3 retail shops and non-food retail.

Whatever Denbighshire County Council decide, the only fairground facilities will be in the Children's village (which is pretty poor even today in comparison, and does not offer anything beyond the age of 12) and the nearby resort of Towyn (in Conwy) will continue to offer during the high season a travelling fairground on the Tir Prince racetrack's grounds.
Personally speaking (as a Denbighshire resident) I think that the Ocean Beach's redevelopment is a disgrace, and more money should be spent upgrading (and even expanding) the fairground.

So I strongly suggest that if you are in the area, that you photograph as many of the rides that you can. Especially in the end/height of the season, before the non permanent rides are stored away."

(Annonymous)

As we know,Ocean Beach closed for the last time on 2/9/07. It's really sad that nothing has happened to the place since then.

Please pass through the turnstiles if you are riding again.

Hi Gary

Those predictions were 100% correct.
It is truly a shame, what has happened to Ocean Beach. The proposed ASDA will have a lot of competition from the newly extended ALDI on the other side of the road!

I remember the 60's when the main fairground was near the Marine Lake but only the miniature railway was preserved. Ocean Beach was mostly childrens rides until the main fair at Marine Lake closed. The Marine lake area mostly consists of mown grass nowadays. There was a website featuring that era which seems to have disappeared.
