Southport: Urban Splash Chosen To Develop Pleasureland Site

Postby mrjimlowe » 21 Mar 2008, 02:59

New Pleasureland Update: Thursday 20 March 2008 - 2 PM

BBC Radio Merseyside News have today announced that Urban Splash have been chosen by Sefton Council to redevelop Southport seafront including the Pleasureland site. They will be consulting local people.

Dreamstorm were told in December that they had not been shortlisted but Norman Wallis, Managing Director of Dreamstorm in an interview for Southport.GB.com, said they intend to keep the site open until the end of the summer season as planned. In April 2007, Dreamstorm also announced the development of another site in Southport which was earmarked for a £20m development.

Nothing on the Urban Splash website yet http://www.urbansplash.co.uk/

More details in this BBC report:

Notice it says the "now closed" Pleasureland site.

New Pleasureland's opening date for the summer season was scheduled for 15th March. This was postponed until Good Friday 21st March as some rides were not ready on time partly due to bad weather. The site has been tidied up, buildings have been painted and fencing has been repaired on the site. A Mad Mouse coaster is also being built for the summer season. The old Traumatizer station has also been demolished.

Members of the North West Coastal Resorts forum are currently considering an online petition to the Prime Minister to halt the decline of our coastal resorts.
When it is on line, I will be posting a link.

Sounds like a seaside Centre Parks to me. it could even be a Rhyl type sun center.

That will probably be too expensive for the average person and there's probably nothing for day trippers either.

These decisions have been made in Bootle by Sefton Council with no consideration for public opinion. These are the same councilors who wanted to get rid of the Anthony Gormley statues at crosby Beach.

If local people object. it would go to public enquiry which will at least delay things.
It's all very well getting these award - winning companies in, but those awards are for architecture and not for popularity.

There will be Council elections in May and local people should vote accordingly.

How many people thought that the word "Classic" was going to refer to the resort "being traditional and enduring" then?

Hang on..Now I see the council spin...

Classic can also mean "an archetypal example of some particular thing or occurrence"

..a prototype in other words.

In this instance a beautifully designed tourist area with central inner open aired courtyards, a beach, water, a wintergarden and hotels built to the highest professional standards.

It all sounds great to me but then it would do...

Isn't that originally what Southport the town used to look like?

I'd not dismiss it too quickly.

Sure it's not Pleasureland - but that's gone - Urban Splash are not baddies.

It might just be something decent and part of an updated version of what Southport used to be - beautiful, before the cr*ppy Ocean Plaza was built.

I would suggest Urban Splash might be open to some suggestions too.

I agree EAS, UB are far from baddies here - It just makes me smile that what we will end up with is a micro version of what Southport already had to offer anyway.

..and I miss the Cyclone...

Well, I miss the Cyclone, and I and others did all we could to try to save it, and indeed the other historic attractions on site, but really by the time we realised that it was under threat it was pretty well on the way to being demolished to a large extent, If we had had time I might have been able to in the end have it listed, but there were a number of 'mistakes' with EH and the DCMS and by the time we got them to see that, Amanda T had demolished the rest.

But the infighting at local level in Southport didn't help either, crazy really, and nor indeed did the 'supporters' of AT who made life difficult too.
