Courtesy of YouTube: these poignant images of Happiland (aka Peter Pan's Playground) half way through the clip.

Another great video.

Happiland was where Ocean Plaza is now.

Norman Wallis, the current leaseholder at New Pleasureland had a plan to spend £20Million. on a plot of land at the other side of the pier but there are no details. It is certainly much smaller than the Pleasureland site.

As most people are aware, New Pleasureland will open again in 2009 from Easter. The new development plan by Urban Splash has been delayed, possibly because of their current financial situation, so NPL's lease has been extended for another year.

Here are the opening dates from the NPL forum:

Easter 2009 Opening

Whit Bank Holiday Week
Saturday 23rd May - Sunday 31st May

NOTE OPENING TIMES AND DATES SUBJECT TO CHANGE AND WEATHER CONDITIONS NOT ALL ATTRACTIONS MAY BE AVAILABLE.

Work is currently in progress at the New Pleasureland site including re-surfacing and clearance of unused buildings to make room for more rides.

So not the same Happyland I did a guide for one April a couple of years ago?

;)

I don't remember it sadly - I'm just not quite old enough. I remember the open air pool, and the tightly packed Pleasureland, but not a lot else. I don't think I visited Southport much after I was 16 (1989), and certainly the preceding four years I'd just spent in Pleasureland, rather than elsewhere in town.

It's sad really, but I probably did go, I just don't have memory of it :)
