so what next?

The Save Dreamland Campaign was launched by Joyland Books in January 2003 and is now supported by several thousand people. This is the place to discuss all aspects of saving Margate's famous amusement park and its iconic , Grade II listed Scenic Railway, Britain's oldest roller coaster.

What are the plans for Dreamland? And what has happened with the consultation with the council?

Are there anymore meetings organized?

It would be great to know more

Things have gone a bit quiet over the summer as they always do with this type of thing.

What next:

1. There will be a public inquiry later this year to consider the Local Plan policy for Dreamland. The Save Dreamland Campaign has objected and we will be represented at the inquiry. We will get the chance to put our case forward in front of an independent inspector.
2. Consultants are currently advising on a masterplan for Margate. We will be trying to get involved in that process as soon as time allows. There will be a public consultation on options shortly.
3. We are looking for ideas to raise awareness of the Campaign over the coming months. We are already in talks with the BBC about a possible television documentary, to be shown nationally at prime time, which may or may not happen (we don't know yet). Any other ideas/contributions gratefully received. We need to keep up the momentum.

Of course, we will also be keeping our eye out for planning applications/listed building applications. We will also continue to work with theme park operators on proposals for the site in parallel with all the above (including the European theme park operator that we have been working closely with over the past few months).

One thing that did occur to me - and please forgive me if this is already taking place, is that we need to get the message out to Margate not just that Dreamland is under serious threat but make it crystal clear to the people why they should care. It's not meant to sound patronizing to local people but sometimes it's really useful to 'join up' campaiging to highlight the wider effects.

If Dreamland does close the knock on effect is massive and for that reason it is important to get the interest and backing of local BB owners, shops, beach concession owners etc. I know that the rollercoaster club and other parties interested in the leisure park are extremely supportive but the campaign would be even stronger if it became about saving Margate as a vibrant town.

I'm not sure what other local goups there are apart from the obvious rotary/round table types but if they could be brought on board it would certainly add muscle.

Just a thought,

We already have the Margate Civic Society, Margate Historical Society and the Isle of Thanet Hotel and Guest House Association on board. Some other local groups generally support what we are doing but cannot sign up for political reasons. But the more organisations we can sign up, the better.
