The Save Dreamland Campaign was launched by Joyland Books in January 2003 and is now supported by several thousand people. This is the place to discuss all aspects of saving Margate's famous amusement park and its iconic , Grade II listed Scenic Railway, Britain's oldest roller coaster.

new to this site.
does anyone have any photos of dreamland from the early to
mid 70s? (1970 - 1982 would be good)

this has to be my my most treasured of memories at dreamland,
where as a child this really was a dreamland and although not a resident
of margate regarded this has my second home due to the number of years as a holiday destination for my grandmother, my mother and
myself (also my daughters have started to go every year with my mum)

the times i remember best were even pre the concrete jungle of bembom brothers, when the miniture railway used to run around the whole park
through lush gardens etc.... and the old catapillar ride where a conopy
came over mid way through the ride

also does anyone remeber the half penny arcade that i think was where the boating pool is on the beach? (almost like a mini pier)
why did that get pulled down?

good to hear that the scenic railway has been made a listed item.

Hello Darren

I'd write exactly the same story myself. My grandparents and parents fell in love with Margate in the early 60s. So much so that my parents now have their own holiday flat, they are spending more and more time there and less and less time in Brum! We never missed a year and now my children love it. I'm so grateful to the campaign; it gives me hope for the future of Dreamland and a real sense that I am helping a worthy cause.

I remember the ha'penny aracade 'The Sundeck Casino', next to it was a cafe and the other half appeared to be a restaurant (although I never saw it open!) As with most things in sunny Margate lack of maintenance resulted in its demise. It was demolished as it was considered too costly to renovate it (I'm sure someone will tell me if I'm wrong) The fruit machines ended up at a 1p arcade by the entrance to Dreamland (later became the stowaway ride). Then they went to an aracade called Mirage (now Weatherspoons) I don't know where they are now.

I recall the rides you mentioned, do you also remember the double wheel, the tudor house that revolved (near the minature railway) and the jets? wonderful memories
