CPO - Public Inquiry daily summaries

Postby porf » 12 Jan 2012, 23:23

TDC are publishing daily summaries of the CPO inquiry (as mentioned by the Dreamland Trust) generally a day or so behind. I'll try and keep these links up to date as new summaries appear but otherwise they can always be reached from the main page.

Update : From Day 5's summary it looks as if the inquiry is now going to run into March.

These are a fascinating read.
I'm encouraged by the tone of the reports.

The major problem with this scheme is the high cost of it and the very limited appeal of it and the limited catchment area.
It will not be a destination venue and will mainly appeal to children. A big problem is the very limited summer season now little more than 3 months
A plus point will be the Tesco’s store. They are a major draw and bring in very significant numbers to the area which will result in potential visitors to Dreamland.
Even with the most optimistic figures Dreamland will not even break even and will need substantial subsidies to keep going. A key issue is to how to make it a year round venue particular as out of the summer season the potential market is small.

The problem with market research is that people will more often say what you want to hear suxcch as the would go to Dreamland whereas in reality most would not so the results tend to be eagerated as to potential visitor numbers

Bob,

If you think you have a valid point, why don't you go down to the inquiry and tell them?
Whilst you are there, tell them that the catchment area extends to at least Reading, because we would make a couple of trips to Margate every year if Dreamland was open.

Yes, Bubbles, I'm 42 and coming in from the USA to visit the park and have sent actual paper letters to the Council, PCF, and local media.
What have you done beside whine behind the anonymous protection of your crumb covered keyboard?

Your opinion will matter more once you get off the dole and/or back up your unpopular opinions with some facts. That would require some sort of effort, though, so unless you can find those facts in your refrigerator, I don't see it happening.

Jim, I have a feeling you're not keen on Bob's remarks  I have known Dreamland for almost fifty years, it all started when my parents took me to this wonderful Amusement Park in the early 60s. I was amazed at the size of the park and the huge collection of rides. I rode most of them that day, including The Whirlwind Racer & The Racing Coaster. I visited the park many times throughout it's working life. My wish, along with countless numbers of people, is to see Dreamland re open again. I'm now in my 64th year , and think nothing of travelling any distance to re visit the place I called Dreamland.

Well I'm 35 and now have 3 children that I would love to take to Dreamland and the wonderful Margate beach. We live just over 100 miles away in Welwyn Garden City and can't wait to visit again. Since the demise of Dreamland we haven't visited Margate for at least 6 years instead going to costal resorts nearer to us. We would regulary drive down to Margate at least half a dozen times a year. The crazy thing is the road infrastructure has never been better to get to Margate gone are the days of the 2 - 21/2 hour journey each way.

I am a little confused by his part of your statement. Are you saying that people will come to Margate because of Tescos? Also, are you saying that Tescos would attract visitors who would then simply pop in to Dreamland because they were in the area?

I simply cannot and will not believe that a Tescos store will be a bigger pull for visitors than a up and running Dreamland. Do you think that in 20 years time people will remember Margate for Tescos or because for a rebuilt Dreamland?

Yes, the summer season is short, but if you look at most theme parks they open in the spring until late autumn and often open weekends ie Blackpool. There is always ways of making money and thus keeping the funds coming in.

I live in London, and I (with a fair number of fellow adults in tow) will be coming to Margate many times a season once Dreamland is open again.

There's a Tesco on my doorstep here in London. I don't need to travel all the way to Margate to visit one.

To Blue,

You have to realize with Bob that he's always trying to rattle the cage. He's trying to suggest that Tescos is more of a crowd pull than Dreamland, a pretty poor attempt at an attack on us. But what he didn't think about is that his statement confirms that even he thinks that Dreamland has a future, otherwise there wouldn't be a Dreamland for those Tesco customers to visit.

I have never replied to Bobs posts in the past, but today I will just say, Bobs only function is to try and wind people up - sad that it is.
We will stick by what we believe in and support Dreamland and all that it has meant in the past and all that it means now.
The alternative is to lay down and give up - thats not what any of us are about to do......
Cheers Bob!!!
