Margate Pier

Postby Danny87 » 27 Jun 2004, 00:13

hi, I've just joined this forum being a former resident I find it very interesting :D
I have a couple of questions to ask about Margate Pier. I lived in Margate for nearly 12 years and was there in 1978 when it was destroyed in a storm. I was only 5 so only have vague memories now, but I remember seeing a ton of pictures from the storm in a souvenir type book. I wondered if pictures from this book had ever been published elsewhere or if any more information was available about the fate of the pier.
Also, when were the remains finally got rid of? I visited Margate about 3 years ago and they were gone then and I was quite sad because they were a sort of landmark! I grew up with those remains, so I have a real interest in the story of the pier from it's destruction onwards.
Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately I am unable to visit Margate again until this time next year :( Maybe I could find more info on the web? I am really looking for some photographs from the storm (or the day after) as well as some accounts. All I really remember is walking on the beach the next day and the whole beach being covered in wood! And the carpet in my bedroom actually rising up from the floor due to the wind (I lived in Hatfeild Road).
I can remember the picture book, I think it had the old lifeboat house on the cover being battered by waves. I wish I still had it! :(

Another quick question: What happened to the small jetty that was further down the beach, near Westbrook if I remember? Was that destroyed by storms or pulled down, and if so when?
Thanks in advance!

Just a comment regarding the tourist information office, it hasnt been located at marine terrace for sometime, since the council replaced that area with rocks! as far as im aware the office is now in the high street,

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the info, I was beginning to think I was mad as I couldn't find anything on the small jetty!!
If you get any more info on the main pier being destroyed I'd love to know as information seems very scarce on the net, I've searched everywhere! It's mainly pictures I was looking for, so if I have any luck I'll let you know :)
in the meantime if anyone has any good photographs of the pier in any condition or anywhere in Margate especially from the 70's I'd be extremely grateful if possibly scans could be posted to me.
Thanks again,
Dan

I might be completely off track but could it be the Penny Arcade that you are talking about?

I'm not sure, I remember it as being known to us kids as the Sun Deck or Sun Jetty if I remember rightly. Could be the same thing though definitely!
