From the Dreamland Newsletter:-

"DREAMLAND LOVES ARCHITECTURE!

The Dreamland Trust is delighted to open this year’s RIBA Love Architecture Festival, 21-30 June 2013, in Margate with an exhibition celebrating the work of designer and colourist, Walpole Champneys (1879-1961), whose mural and decorative schemes adorned the interior of the 1934/35 Grade II* listed Dreamland Cinema and Sunshine Café, Margate.

A Cinematic Vision: Walpole Champneys and the Lost Dreamland Mural opens at 11am-5pm on Saturday 22 and runs until Sunday 30 June at the Pie Factory Gallery, Broad Street, Margate CT9 1EW and is one of a number of events being organised by The Dreamland Trust as part of the RIBA Love Architecture Festival.

Walpole Champneys was the commissioned Interior Consultant for the Dreamland Cinema building. He worked closely with architects, Julian Leathart and F W Grainger, at a time when sumptuous interior decoration of cinema buildings was the norm; the Dreamland Cinema building is an important example of that contemporary mood. In the Swedish Grace style, the work has both art deco and constructivist influences and reflects the immersive experience of cinema-going as an ‘other-world’ event of the 1920s and 30s."

This information came from the Dreamland newsletter.

Co-curated by artist Dawn Cole and designers Lindsay Marsden and Jenny Duff, the exhibition will feature original works, images and documents from the Champneys Collection, including Walpole Champneys’ studies for decorative panels within the Dreamland Cinema, alongside archive images of the Sunshine Café and the 40ft mural painted by Walpole Champneys (images supplied by RIBA). The question remains as to whether this mural does still exist, hidden beneath layers of paint just waiting to be rediscovered once restoration of the Cinema building begins…"

Perhaps the people behind the newsletter could put this information on the forum as I'm sure that a lot of people look to this for the latest news and would like to support these events!

From the Carlton cinema website:-

http://www.westgatecinema.co.uk/

Sun 30 Jun 2013

On Sunday 30 June at 5pm and 8pm The Dreamland Trust closes the Love Architecture Festival for Margate with a cinematic fundraiser generously supported by the British Film Institute and hosted by the Carlton Cinema, Westgate-on-Sea CT8 8RE.

This is a rare opportunity to see a cinematic screening of Lyndsay Anderson’s ground breaking 1953 documentary short film, O Dreamland, cert Unknown; Tomorrow Calling, a short adaptation of William Gibson’s The Gernsback Continuum about an architectural photographer who is drawn into a 1930s futuristic dream, cert 15 (contains some adult content); and Peter Greenaway’s full-length feature, The Draughtsman’s Contract, set in 1694 about an artist commissioned to make a series of drawings of a country estate (filmed at Kent’s Groombridge Place) where things are not as they seem: cert 12.

There are a limited number of seats available tickets at £15 per person and includes original, limited edition Dreamland commemorative screen print by Margate-based artist, Nick Morley, who recently designed the book cover for Hitchcock’s Vertigo as part of the BFI’s series on classic films http://www.linocutboy.com; booking is strongly recommended. All proceeds go towards rebuilding Dreamland Margate.

You can buy your tickets from the Cinema box office.

Ditto!

Good suggestion.

Jan is signed up on here, but don't know if there's a deliberate split between Trust and Forum?

The newsletter is always posted to the news page on the Dreamland Margate website (http://dreamlandmargate.wordpress.com/), so please check that regularly.

It is also sent out to all members of the Save Dreamland Campaign who are signed up to the mailing list. If you want to sign up to the mailing list, visit: http://www.joylandbooks.com/scenicrailway/joinus.htm We promise that you won't receive endless emails from us and we will not pass on your details to any third party.

(Some members have told me that they have not received the newsletter via the mailing list this month. We have been having some difficulty with the mailing system for the past few weeks. It has been resent to people, but please let me know if you are on the mailing list but have not received the newsletter so I can be sure that it is sending to all email addresses).

Having events there keeps Dreamland in the public eye.

there will be many events that will fit into the framework of Dreamland, benefiting both the park and the organizations involved. Keeping event space inexpensive will draw people in and land events that can't otherwise afford to happen.
