While I don't condone this, I have never really had much of an opinion on this kind of thing before. It is when I see people compromising the condition of important assets like the Scenic that I find idiotic. I know any serious harm was unlikely to be caused but it is just the lack of thinking in some peoples case. So caught up with getting in these places, little thought seems to be given about the importance and relevance they could have to people.

I remember hearing about how one of the art deco panels from the cinema's Compton Organ was busted due to the pressure of someone standing on it. I just hope that didn't come about from the same careless exploring seen here.

Half the challenge with these guys is being able to get into a secure site. He will of now told his mates and more hits will follow shortly .The Council will now be aware from this forum that this is going on and will need to step up their security as they are liable for anyone that hurts themselves on their property.I fail to understand why these people would want to damage this ride further and put their own lifes at risk.

I cannot write what I think of this person. I just wish they had been in Godden's arcade before, during (continuously) and after it burned down.

I worked at the Grade 11* listed State Theatre in Grays Essex. This 30s art deco former cinema has stood empty for many years. Although the building was manned by security, many photos have been posted on flickr, including back stage and projection areas. They proudly announce themselves as 28 days later and seem to boast the fact that they can gain access to protected buildings.

All of the above good points aside, I hope the Scenic gets thoroughly (legally, safely and professionally) photographed from every angle in its current state before restoration begins as there's something really stirring about the deserted overgrown ride. The last 6-7 years have been a notable period in the Scenic's history, I'm hoping to see some kind of Scenic Railway through the years display in the completed Dreamland, and pictures of it in its current state would be a key part of such a display.

I agree with Peet. As sad as it is to see the Scenic like this (and we will next weekend) we should record it for history.

It's idiots breaking bits of it when they are not supposed to be there that I object to.

Woody, no one said there is anything wrong taking photos, but when the person admits to gaining entry onto the site without permission and climbing over the ride and worse of all, seemed proud that he had broken it while doing it, thats what upsets people!

I personally don't have a problem with this. I often enjoy looking at their site for what I consider to be a fascinating insight into many English and European sites of architectural, historical and social interest that have been left to rot by their owners, and I believe their objective is to share this experience with a wider audience that would not otherwise be able to access them. They don't boast of, or advocate, damage to any of these sites and they do not pass on information about their means of access.

The only mention of damaging the Scenic Railway is

Apparently when operational the company decided they needed to treat the wood to protect the structure but had coated it with a protective paint while the wood was damp. That obviously contained the moisture and eventually caused the wood to rot through. It certainly didn't feel safe standing up there in strong wind. My foot went through the track at one point lol.
