TUNNEL RAILWAY & MERRIE ENGLAND/PLEASURAMA RAMSGATE

The Great British Seaside Resort: sun, sand, piers, funfairs and donkey rides. But that is only part of the attraction. If you love being beside the seaside, talk about it here!

TUNNEL RAILWAY & MERRIE ENGLAND/PLEASURAMA RAMSGATE

Postby RadioactiveKiddie » 08 Oct 2007, 19:23

I have a big interest in the above & wondered if anyone on here has any interesting pics, photos (or even footage??!!) of anything?? So sad these days, huge amounts of Tarmac car park and boarded up wasteland. Just the 2 clowns still clinging high on the cliff face. A reminder of happier daze....... :(
Also is anything featured in any available books/DVD's??
Thanks.

Hi,
A local person sold a small book on the tunnel railway (I have a copy but can not find it).

I have this booklet too somewhere. There is sometimes a person selling the same kind of thing on E-Bay.
There's also a DVD of old Thanet publicity films available, also on E-Bay,but there is only a very short clip of the Octopus Ride.
Unfortunately there seems to be very little footage of this site, there must be plenty of family photo's and 'Home-Movie' clips out there somewhere.
Best of luck,
Greg

Railway Tunnel pictures & histiry

Postby zumiweb » 18 Oct 2007, 06:28

Michaels Bookshop, (http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/catalogue/) publishes dozens of facsimile and local history books including "The Ramsgate Tunnels: Main Line Public Airraid Shelter & Scenic Railway": http://tinyurl.com/3d2nog

Pictures of the tunnel railway appear in several of his general 'pictures of old Ramsgate' books too.

Lots more info about its wartime and current state at the Thanet Underground blog:

and some nice 'then and now' shots here (scroll down quite a long way!):

Hope that helps - I also had a great picture on my blog in September:

Thanks guys! Yes, I have the little books on The Tunnel Railway & also Ramsgate's tunnel network. I'm starting to collate a postcard collection of this area of Ramsgate too. Just wondered if anyone had anything else?? I'd love to see some footage of the Tunnel or World Scenic Railway as it was first known!! I'll keep searching and maybe post some "now & then" pics of my own when I get a chance to take some of the area as it is today (sad :( )!!
Thanks again.
