Work begins on Weston Grand Pier
17 April, 2009
Work has begun on Angus Meek Architects’ redevelopment of Weston-super-Mare’s fire-ravaged Grand Pier
Hampshire contractor Commercial Marine & Piling has been appointed to fix 70 new piles to the pier to help support the new pavilion.
Angus Meek beat Grimshaw, Stride Treglown, Acanthus Ferguson Mann, AWW and Ray Hole Architects to win the public competition last October.
At an estimated cost of £10 million, the pier is to be 60% larger than its predecessor, with an 85m panoramic tower, a helter skelter and an Edwardian-style tea room and conference venue.
