Another seaside fire!

The Great British Seaside Resort: sun, sand, piers, funfairs and donkey rides. But that is only part of the attraction. If you love being beside the seaside, talk about it here!

:D So pleasing there is money (loads of insurance I would think) so Weston-Super-Mare can have an iconic pier reinstated as soon as possible!
I am already excited by the prospect of a new ghost train (I hope so) and hopefully a tasteful new design to be admired for decades or more. :D

How disappointing. How uninspired. It looks like a multiplex cinema on a retail park...Perhaps it would be more at home on certain areas of Southport or Morecambe seafronts.

Out of the designs available I suppose it's the best one, and it draws from the original a bit.
But I would have preferred something Art Deco,or maybe Victorian to blend in and have lasting appeal.

I thought it rather fun, and not much point really in recreating a pastiche, when these things were built in the first place the architecture was of its time, so it's carrying on a tradition.

Looks fun, and could be a great attraction.

I know - but great that another will be built, and not simply vanish!

I think it will be colourful and fun when it's built, the old one wasn't actually so old, it was a rebuild of the previous!

I like it better than the others which were architecturally worthy but a bit dull, really.

I don't ever want to think of Weston without pier! And yes the old one was a rebuild (was it 1932 ?) .
Just so many memories all through my childhood (late 1960's and the 1970's) my father and I used to go fishing off of Burnbeck pier on a Saturday, and as a treat on the way home I could ether have 50p pocket money (55p later on) to spend on the pier, or a visit to the waxworks.
I always loved those green lights on the pier and whenever I went to Weston the green reflecting on the sea (if it was in) brought my childhood back....and I have lost that now.
But I am looking forwards to the new one.I heard on radio 4 tonight that they will never know the cause of the fire for sure, but it was probably an electrical fault in the ceiling of one of the front towers (I cant remember which one).I thought it was a deep fat fryer,no mention of that on this bulletin. :?
Maybe we should all meet up when the new one is built take some photos have a chat? could be fun. :D

Today's news in Building Design:

http://www.bdonline.co.uk/story.asp?sto ... eklydigest

Work begins on Weston Grand Pier
17 April, 2009

Work has begun on Angus Meek Architects’ redevelopment of Weston-super-Mare’s fire-ravaged Grand Pier

Hampshire contractor Commercial Marine & Piling has been appointed to fix 70 new piles to the pier to help support the new pavilion.

Angus Meek beat Grimshaw, Stride Treglown, Acanthus Ferguson Mann, AWW and Ray Hole Architects to win the public competition last October.

At an estimated cost of £10 million, the pier is to be 60% larger than its predecessor, with an 85m panoramic tower, a helter skelter and an Edwardian-style tea room and conference venue.
