SOUTHPORT funfair entrepreneur Norman Wallis says that if credit-crunch hit Urban Splash do not want to redevelop the resort’s former Pleasureland site he is more than happy to step in.
Sefton Council picked award-winning Urban Splash as developers ahead of Mr Wallis’ plans for the 25-acre site but they have released no firm details since it was announced in September they would shed staff due to the economic crisis.
Patrick Sheridan, associate director of Urban Splash, confirmed they still do have designs on Southport: “Our plans will be developed around the classic resort theme. We are working with the local authority and we will release something in the next couple of months.”
But Mr Wallis, whose family has a long history with Southport’s seafront said he was waiting in the wings with his venture Dreamstorm, which he claims has the backing of two companies to help fund the multi-million pound transformation of his ideas.
Yesterday Mr Wallis held talks with the council to extend Dreamstorm’s lease on the site (temporary funfair New Pleasureland) which Visiter sources speculate could be for two years.
Mr Wallis said: “We met Urban Splash to discuss ideas but we explained we wouldn’t give them our ideas as it would be like giving them our ‘blueprint’.
“A climate-controlled next generation attraction is what we want to create in Southport, offering quality service, variety and value for money, bringing guests from all over the UK and Europe.”
He added: “My grandfather helped start the fair and I’ve always had connections with the town; my great, great, great grandfather was H.J. Wallis and it’s over 100 years since we have had rides here. It would be fantastic to be able to transform Southport for the future. The town needs attractions to bring people in. We can do that.”
The next few months will determine whether Mr Wallis has any future with the site.
