From Planning Resource:
The pier in Eastbourne has been upgraded from a Grade II listing to Grade II* following a review by English Heritage.
Described as one of the best exampled of piers in the country, it was originally listed at Grade II in 1971 but has now has it status upgraded to recognise that it is one of the finest remaining seaside piers designed by Victorian engineer Eugenius Birch.
The Department for Culture Media and Sport said the listing upgrade could help the piers' owners with plans for renovations. These may include repairs to the theatre as well as new attractions, with possibilities including a monorail and conservatory housing a casino or restaurant.
Culture Minister Barbara Follett said: "I hope that recognising its particular importance in this fashion will help to breathe new life into this Victorian masterpiece and will allow many more generations to enjoy the access that it gives to the sea."
