Hastings Pier closed for good? [16/7/06]
Following the collapse of some of the pier's supports, Hastings Borough Council has closed Hastings Pier on the grounds of public safety. All the Pier's shops, which are leased to separate tenants, have been closed. The Pier's owners, Ravensclaw Investments Inc, will have to foot the bill for the repairs. The pier was bought by the current owners in 2002, and has since been refurbished and marketed the 'Covent Garden by the Sea'.

I walked down to the pier just a few weeks ago on my last visit to Hastings. I remember thinking it had such potential, it looked great (but I like piers), just a shame it was closed up.
Such bad news, what a bunch of complete idiots doing this kind of thing, really annoys me...

Posted: 05 Oct 2010, 19:18although they are waiting for a better survey,it looks like the structure is ok and above the steelwork got the worst.I saw a helicopter fly over this afternoon and although it looked bad the steelwork didnt look twisted so fingers crossed

Fire on piers etc is a long list now.
Southend, Weston super mud, Brighton? and various others
(also Dunston Staithes have had this same problem)
At least the owner(s) of Weston S Mare have rebuilt their pier....
so there is hope for Hastings.
IIRC the two suspects are both under 21! even if *they* get as far as conviction, what is the chance if a suitable punishment......(gets off the soapbox!)

Bet they sue for the truma and stress of being arrested...
Sadly unless there is CCTV footage of them doing it then any everdence would have gone up with the rest of the pier.
Posted: 06 Oct 2010, 09:44Witnesses reported hearing several loud explosions in the early stage of the fire. I can only imagine these would have been gas cylinders, it seems a bit foolish to have left them there when the pier closed.

Posted: 22 Oct 2010, 13:48New things can rise from the ashes. I have just seen a TV article on the completion of Weston's re-built pier. However, in seems that the owners put their hands in their wallets for this project. In the case of Hastings pier the owners can't even be contacted.

Posted: 30 Oct 2010, 20:49Hopefully, there will be more support (inc money!) for the local community trust that had (I think) persuaded the council to serve a CPO on the pier's offshore owners and then transfer ownership to the HPWRT.
In any case, I wish HPWRT well with their aims, I just hope that there is enough pier left to save.....
