Urban Splash pull out of Southport

The Great British Seaside Resort: sun, sand, piers, funfairs and donkey rides. But that is only part of the attraction. If you love being beside the seaside, talk about it here!

Urban Splash pull out of Southport

Postby mrjimlowe » 13 Feb 2012, 20:30

The planned redevelopment of Southport seafront will not be going ahead now, due to the current economic climate. This development was to include the Pleasureland site. Urban Splash were chosen as developer over Norman Wallis of Dreamstorm who was proposing a £100m development in 2007.

Since then dreamstorm have only been awarded short-term leases for the site, but no doubt they will be seeking a long term lease for Pleasureland when the current one runs out in 4 years.

An £80m development in Southport will not go ahead, after developer Urban Splash pulled out.
The Manchester-based company was awarded the contract to develop the former Pleasureland site in March 2008. The development, known as Southport Marine Park, was due to be completed by 2016.
A spokesman for Sefton Council said: "We understand this decision by Urban Splash and acknowledge, in the current economic climate, that they have had to review their position with regard to the projects they are involved in.
"With the expectation that the present poor economic conditions will improve we continue to explore interest from other parties with regard to the long-term development options for this site and are hopeful that we will be able to deliver a quality development in the future."
The site was home to Southport's Pleasureland theme park which closed in 2006. A temporary fair has been on the site since 2007.
