Turner Contemporary original plan scrapped

Postby Zoidstar » 08 Feb 2006, 19:26

On Wednesday 8th February Kent County Council and Thanet District Council announced their decision not to proceed with the new building for Turner Contemporary. The latest estimates for the building are approaching £50 million - an increase of £20 million on the last estimate. Given the need to ensure the scheme is affordable and an effective use of taxpayers money, Kent County Council has decided it can no longer proceed with the current plans.

However, Kent County Council remains totally committed to building a Turner Contemporary gallery in Margate - but one that will be built on the nearby Rendezvous site at far less cost and less risk to the taxpayer. The County Council will be working closely with Thanet District Council on exciting new proposals that will provide the potential for major new cultural, business and leisure facilities for East Kent. More details of the project will be revealed in eight weeks time. The authorities will be organising a public meeting to hear the views of local people
