The Roundabout in the Water

The Great British Seaside Resort: sun, sand, piers, funfairs and donkey rides. But that is only part of the attraction. If you love being beside the seaside, talk about it here!

The Roundabout in the Water

Postby Gary » 28 Jun 2003, 21:03

Does anyone else remember this small roundabout from the mid to late sixties period that operated in the boating pool at Lytham, Lancs? It had a canopy on top, seats around the outside and two back to back seats in the middle.

There was a small walkway onto the ride and I seem to remember an "exhaust pipe" at the side of the roundabout spewing water as it turned.

The ride always lasted for ages and I always came off feeling dizzy..but every year from the mid to late sixties I would ride it without fail.

This and the scooped, dripping, "icy" ice cream that I would invariably be holding with my sandy hands are the two most abiding memories from the Lytham St Annes of my childhood.

Well, who would have believed it?? After all these years searching for film of the ride, I find that my late dad had taken a cine film of my sister on it circa 1966...

Excuse the dark film and the musak (put on by the company who transferred the original 30 mins of cine to DVD)

The clip lasts about 1 minute and the name of the ride is the Whirligig!

PS: My sister is 60 now!
