Weston Super Mare Coaster: 1963

Postby Gary » 29 Jul 2014, 08:15

Hi All

Can anyone shed more light on the pier coaster featured in this wonderful film clip? (about 4:40 in) http://www.thenicerooms.com/screen-1

The film was made in 1963 for the NSPCC by the noted film director John Krish, "They Took Us To The Sea" follows a group of children taken by Inspectors of the NSPCC on an outing from Birmingham to Weston-Super Mare. The NSPCC organised therapeutic holidays like this for children from socially deprived backgrounds until the 1970s.

The full length film running at 25:09 can be found by clicking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miP88I10MVo

That is quite a find. It is an indoor junior wooden roller coaster. I have seen no other information on this.

From RCDB

"..The Figure of Eight is believed to have been a German travelling roller coaster that previously operated in Glasgow in the pavilion above the Ghost train. The Heal funfair family purchased it from Grand Pier and operated it at least on the Brighton seafront.

This roller coaster was built inside of the Pier Pavilion"

Operated from 1943 (approx) to 1969
