At about 17:10 today (Friday 20), the two operators of the Scenic Railway evacuated the ride after smoke was detected by one of them whilst taking the train around. They notified management who attended and aided evacuation and called for the fire brigade to attend the scene. They discovered a small fire in the structure adjacent to the biggest drop on the ride, under the track of the double drop (roughly center in the image below).
By 9pm the trackboards, rails, joists and collars had been removed, and new joists cut and placed onto new collars. The ride is likely to open again tomorrow.
It appears the fire started through simple mechanical friction of the train passing over the track. The timber was already hot due to the weather and a spark from the wheel passing over the joint between the steel rail top would seem to be sufficient to start a fire. No one was hurt, which is the main thing. |

Good news the staff were on the ball and caught it early. Long live the Roller Coaster! _________________ Jimmy Godden & Bob/Barry Moss ARE the Devil Personified! |

Sundays is the worst day for that as it's the accepted meeting day of the Jetty Boys. The vandalism referred to though is likely just from teenagers from the estate over Marine Parade.
I've known concrete blocks from the adjacent wall to be thrown onto the Scenic track at the bottom of the chain before; to balls thrown onto the track, and kids breaking in and then setting off the fire extinguishers. There was even a break on in the staff room this year. As far as I'm concerned the site is rather poorly secured against trespass, but then what can you do? |
