The Fence

The Save Dreamland Campaign was launched by Joyland Books in January 2003 and is now supported by several thousand people. This is the place to discuss all aspects of saving Margate's famous amusement park and its iconic , Grade II listed Scenic Railway, Britain's oldest roller coaster.

Firstly many thanks for the hpotos Paul, I new the fence came close to the Scenic, but that is really terrible and is hardly giving Dreamland the best chance for the 2006 season. As I've said before it's hard to see what they are playing at, and if this is a test case we'll rise to it. Again as Paul says, it doesn't look we'll get it taken down in time for the 2006 season, but we should really aim to get it removed before the summer holidays as then it will really affect the park's profits and help to make it look unviable.

I agree with Jim that it is another reason to oppose the developers, as if they make such a meal over a fence then it doesn't bode well for something on a much larger scale. We are also going to be monitoring the park this year to see how hard they try to make the park a financial success so we can challenge them if it does prove unviable. I'm sure this will be taken into account.

The owners have been given another 14 days to submit a planning application.

Well they are already half way through this time, and still no application. In fact I might be right in thinking that the next step starts just as the public consultation finishes, so we should have plenty to keep us going. Incidentally as it is now only a week until the consultation finishes I will put another lot of messages around some of the major internet roller coaster forums to make sure that any enthusiates who have been putting it off get their application is ASAP.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that council members may be on the take.
Just make sure they do their job and don't let this blow over.

Well I think I'm right in saying that today was the deadline for an application for the fence, and so far none has been listed on the website. I will wait for one of the coordinators to give us the cue on how to act next, but if I'm right and today is the deadline then I'm really beginning to run out of patience.

At first I did wonder whether these mix up were genuine mistakes, but you can't help thinking that it can't really be that as if you're a development company trying to make millions out of a site you're going to take a bit more interest than this. They clearly have some kind of strategy going and I'm surprised that a certain few people in power appear not to be able to see this (by this I'm refering to the way the Conservatives continue to support the developers)

There is no waiting.

The council needs to start fining Waterbridge and if need be, hire their own crews and equipment to remove the fence and send Waterbridge the bill.

It may be our job to insist on it.
The Scenic Railway is listed and building any permenant structure so near is a clear violation.

It seems clear to me that Waterbridge are trying to split the site in two thus making the area behind the Scenic into Dreamland and the main area in front of the fence available for redevelopment!

Well he original letter was sent on the 15 of February and this expired after 28 days (ie finishing on the 15th of March). They were then given a 14 day extension which would have finished on the 29th. My maths isn't that good so I may be wrong.

The fencing was errected to ensure the safety of people visiting the fairground this year. Further fencing will be errceted following a Risk Assessment of the Site which has to be carried out under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974. We have to put safety as the number One priority.

I notice you use the pronoun 'we'. Does this mean that you are connected to the Margate Regeneration Company? Hmmm, interessting. As you know Toby Hunter recently said that he didn't know anything about you. You mention that you have sources and when you refer to the MRC you say 'we' so can we take it that you are either an official representative or an imposter?

If you're an imposter why are Waterbridge allowing you to continue posting instead of contacting the moderators? I get more suspicious by the day. When people have talked about banning you I have leapt to your defence, but am beginning to regret this. In my opinion you are related to the MRC, although evidence is a little inconclusive. If not then you have some other sinister motive.

If you are saying that huge industrial fence right up against the Scenic Railway is required by Health & Safety then you must be having a laugh...but then again it IS April Fool's Day!

Why then haven't you requested planning permission for it?

Yes, Bob.
Are you implying that it's more dangerous to stand next to the Scenic Railway than to ride it?

You brits are way too cordial. Let me just say what we've all been thinking:
Bob, you're an idiot.*

* What I really meant was "Bob, you're an asshole," but I thought that was a bit harsh since this is a public forum.

Well the retrospective application for the retention of the fence has definitely now gone in.

I got a letter through from TDC Planning today to let me know, along with a little booklet on how to object!

They estimate up to 5 days before the application is available to view on ukplanning.com
