Now - Let's Help save Coney Island

The Save Dreamland Campaign was launched by Joyland Books in January 2003 and is now supported by several thousand people. This is the place to discuss all aspects of saving Margate's famous amusement park and its iconic , Grade II listed Scenic Railway, Britain's oldest roller coaster.

Now - Let's Help save Coney Island

Postby porterm » 24 Nov 2009, 01:22

Hi all - it looks like Brooklyn's historic attraction needs all the help it can muster now if it is to fight the local rezoning of its former site acreage.

I was lucky to visit it during the Cyclone's 80th birthday year a couple of years ago, and despite its rather rundown state I still had great fun. (See www.saveconeyisland.net for all the info and their forums etc).

I wanted to draw your attention to this important petition that I recently signed:

"Save Coney Island!"
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/Save_Coney_Island?e

I really think this is an important cause, and I'd like to encourage you to add your signature, too. It's free and takes less than a minute of your time.

Thanks!

Done.
Also went to their museum a few years ago, met with the caretaker and discussed Dreamland with him. They had some fine pieces of Coney's History (old signs, ride cars...)
I was then invited to participate in their sideshow as "Monsieur Electro de Paris", sidekick to the excellent Eek the Geek, playing with old electricity tricks.
A great memory...
I dream of Dreamland...

I've signed, it was Coney Island and similar theme parks which were the inspiration for Dreamland. Dreamland was even named after an American park with the same name.

Many thanks for all the support guys - I think the 1927 Cyclone's the only "woodie" that rides smoother in the back of the train! (I didn't heed that advice on my inaugural trip on it sadly - not quite a hands up type ride I felt, although a real classic, and wild with it)

I'd hate to see this place diminished in its future offering if the City and big business have their ways.
