Margate Vs Southend

Postby Alan » 12 Sep 2004, 10:08

Hi all,
We decided to visit Southend yesterday-Saturday, although at the end of season the seafront was buzzing and Adventure Island had big queues on nearly all rides. This is how Margate should be and used to be. The contrast between the two seaside towns is unbelievable, needless to state that the cafe's and restaurents were experiencing brisk, busy trade.

PS Also there were fireworks from the pier.

I visited Southend for the first time in many moons last year - on Campaign business! - and was astonished at its transformation. It bore no resemblance to the rather sad town I remembered from the mid 80s. Indeed, this is what Margate could be like - only better. After all, Southend does not have our golden sands, the beautiful architecture of our Old Town or the myriad of attractions that Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate offer. And only Margate has Dreamland and the Scenic.

Hi Sarah,
I totally agree that Margate is a much superior location compared to Southend and has much to offer the discerning tourist, dont forget The Shell Grotto :D

Hi Alan et al,

Yes, it can be very frustrating to see how Southend's Adventure Island has been tastefully transformed, compared to the present day Margate. We all know the underlying reasons for this though, and as has been said, Margate can probably offer a more diverse day out its many varied attractions. Nothing against Southend-on-Sea though, which I have visited many times over the last decade or so. It has its world-famous longest pier in the world as its signature claim to fame I suppose, after all.

Margate, of course, has its renowned Scenic Railway.

PS Nice photos of the Dreamland Says Goodnight event
