Heritage or not at the new Dreamland ?

The Save Dreamland Campaign was launched by Joyland Books in January 2003 and is now supported by several thousand people. This is the place to discuss all aspects of saving Margate's famous amusement park and its iconic , Grade II listed Scenic Railway, Britain's oldest roller coaster.

The Black Country Museum in Dudley is a real crowd puller, based on Victorian and Edwardian times, a lot of people fall in love with our heritage. Blist Hill in Telford is another great place and yes my girls, age 16 and 13 love these places, so they appeal to all ages.

I am looking forward to the opening of Dreamland and I'm sure, Sarah, Vince, Charlie and Sam and many others will be battling (along with us) to get in those gates first!

I think it will work regardless. There is a lot of love for the Dreamland project, this is why we all check into this site so often. And I like the idea of having the odd temporary attraction to add variety. It will save the expense of adding new attractions every couple of seasons which is really needed to stop parks from going stale.

As I said in my previous post I obviously wont visit multiple times a season like I do Alton Towers, Thorpe park or Blackpool, but will pop in for a day every few years for the simple reason it will offer something different from all the other parks I visit. Roll on 2012 :D

Forgive me Vince, and I'm not shooting you, but you know me.

And I know lots of other people in Margate who think the park will re-open and are looking forward to it.

I wish I could be more optimistic but it seems the site goes further downhill every day. Every time I park in the car park I see more decay on the Scenic Railway, no maintenance has been carried out for three years and the remaining structure is now effectively scrap.

If Jimmy Godden is a partner in our venture, he doesn't seem a particularly enthusiastic one.

"Xtremecoasters"] There is a lot of love for the Dreamland

That quote is so true!

Vince - be optimistic!!!!! Look how far Dreamland has come - its amazing and all thanks to people believing in it!
Don't forget you may not be able to see whats happening, but the important bit now is the preparation, proper preparation means a great end result.

Thanks Nick for the update - much appreciated. Isn't there a book quoting the riches people in the uk? Could we drop them all a line?

Why not try Bill Gates. Heritage is the one think his money has never been able to buy

Hi all

If anyone needs any reassurance about this upcoming project, then I can only suggest they should have, if possible, paid a visit to last Saturday's "Something For the Weekend" event at Westgate's Carlton Cinema. I chatted to a very astute guy outside next to a brilliant liveried ice cream trolley complete with a Dreamland Margate logo'd parasol. He mentioned several things to me which made me more convinced regarding the proposed plans, especially as they were attracting more local people involvement with the project.

If I can (and no-one else beats me to it) I'll try to upload some shots I took of the aforementioned trolley and cinema/scooter shots outside the cinema. I was very impressed with the "mods and rockers" support the event had lured.

I felt it was a bit of a shame that I did not recognise too many faces at the event, apart from Susan Marsh and her husband, and Nick Evans. I met Sarah Vickery, Claire and Dave Collard later in the evening outside the relaunched Britannia pub; apologies for not re-entering the bar after we met but I had an early-ish start the next morning.

Martin :D

All I am doing is passing on comment about local opinion. There is deep foreboding in the town now that Mr Godden has opened another seafront amusement arcade after the misfortunes at Pleasurama, the Rotunda, Mr G's and on the Scenic Railway.

It would give an enormous boost to Margate if some formal projection was made about when physical work is likely to start on the new Dreamland.

No doubt there will be, if and when the Trust has millions. You can't apply for Lottery funds without a sound business plan, and you can't have a Trust without accounts.

No doubt a great deal of it will be spent on champagne and caviar for Nick, naturally.

Of course there will be people who will complain at whatever happens, but me, I'm only so thankful that things are actually happening at all. Which they are...

Ah, but that's only the start, there's more to be applied for yet... Nick has spent that 4 mill on a fast car. round the world cruise, and and other such essentials.

It's shortsighted to think everything's a failure at this moment because there aren't visual results.
It's also short sighted to think of the new Dreamland as just another amusement park. It'll be a multi-use and dynamic facility, much more geared to families (daytime), entertainment, special events, and local repeat business.

I've just seen what we've all been seeking on TV; good ole Meridian Tonight News (ITV1, UK) has just featured an item on the revival of Dreamland, hopefully by Spring 2012.

Whilst I was very impressed with their feature, I was still somewhat concerned that they still seem to announce that "the Scenic Railway was destroyed after a fire in 2008". Rather misleading to the uninitiated, although they did feature a view of the righthand side of the structure.

Happy days await.........

Martin

PS As Kyle just said in his last post, you have to view the wider picture, and most importantly I feel, keep the faith. The tide is surely turning at last.
