Drive the Dreamland Miniature Railway!

The Save Dreamland Campaign was launched by Joyland Books in January 2003 and is now supported by several thousand people. This is the place to discuss all aspects of saving Margate's famous amusement park and its iconic , Grade II listed Scenic Railway, Britain's oldest roller coaster.

Having left the tunnel with the stone facade, the train then heads out through the racing coaster (of which the structure has started to appear) towards a small tunnel (not yet in place).

This is very good, a few years ago I saw a bit of the later version of 'Captain Scarlet'...now done in extremely life-like computer animation, at the time I thought it would be great to use the technology to re-create Dreamland from different eras, so you could 'virtually' walk round the Park.

And when it is finished, it will be easy to get a copy!

I have also sourced a few copies of the original game (as it is no longer easily available) and they will be available to buy for newcomers to the simulator.

I have been trying to get around the Train Simulator and i have some learning to do, i still haven't had much progress as i im still learning the different functions and interface, hopefully i will also be able to have a great work as yours.

I am looking forward to see more of your work as it is really inspiring especially for newbies like me.

If the Dreamland Miniature Railway is ever rebuilt for real, and if anyone has £250,000 burning a hole in their pocket, I just found this 15" gauge replica of the Flying Scotsman on ebay.

Meanwhile, to Ben, that's some fantastic work you've done there, keep the pics coming!

Strange really, because you could probably buy and overhaul 'Billie' for around the same price!

Thanks for the positive comments, will have some more piccies once I have finished my university work.

That is the Morse 4-4-0 petrol locomotive 359.

I have been in contact with the owner of this locomotive and asked him to contact either me or the Save Dreamland Campaign if it is ever offered for sale.

It has been in private ownership on the Evesham Light Railway since 1999 awaiting overhaul, although I understand that it has been in storage since then and no work has ever taken place.

If it is ever offered for sale and I am in a position to buy it, then I will. I know that there are other members here with an interest in narrow-gauge railways so I may return to ask for their advice and help.

It would be a fantastic (and possibly realistic) acquisition for a rebirth of the DMR. It has a lot of history behind it as well, being supposedly rebuilt from the Blakesley Hall Railway's 'Petrolia' of 1905 which would make it of interest to enthusiasts as well as theme park goers.

First route pictures in a little while. Starts to get a bit harder now as there are fewer pictures.

Magic Garden Station taking shape. (I know this station was out of use in the 1950's, but it has been included to give more interest to the route).

Again, good stuff!

There do seem to be very few photos of the DMR in existence, apart from those taken at the station areas, there's some British Pathe footage showing the DMR and the Whirlwind Racer here, don't know if you've seen it?

Thank you, yes I have, sadly that DMR is the original (loop) line but I did use it for footage of the Whirlwind Racer!

I attach another picture. This is the large metal corrugated buildings at the back of the cinema near the Magic Garden station. The buildings are modeled as they would have been in the late 50's - pictures from the era do confirm that the metal sided/roofed building was behind the top end of the scenic railway (and therefore near the MG station) during this time. The top loop of the scenic itself will sit on the right hand side of this image. The layout of the paths etc. however is more complicated as different accounts say different things, so bear with me for a bit of artistic licence, but the buildings have started to appear.

Image

I am still hoping this will be ready for release by the summer - I am fitting work in during my spare time away from university at the moment :)

Thanks,

Ben
