Dreamland The End

Postby Bob » 12 Jun 2005, 09:05

I think with the sale of the site for Retail Development its the End for Dreamland & the final nail in the coffin of what little is left of Margates Tourists Industry. We are seeing the final years of it. Hopefully much of Margates last years of Dreamland will be captured on video.

I don't think a send rate retail development will be of much interest to tourist.

Its sad to see Dreamland which was once a major attractions close. Centre Parks have provide that good quality attractions can work. Perhaps they will try a Seaside Centre

Hi Bob, you seem pretty certain from your posts that Dreamland has already got the go ahead to become a shopping centre, where have you acquired this information? I do not recall seeing a planning application requesting this.

There is nothing crazy about it. Fairgrounds & holiday camps have always been a part of seaside resorts. It does not have to be exactly the same as Centre Parcs which is based on Activity type holidays but could be similar.
Good accomodation , Pool, Enertainmaint and fairground. Possibly also facilities for Conferences. The days of people taking a week or two week holiday in the UK have long gone. They need to provide good facilities for short breaks. Most seeside resorts just do not have the facilities now particularly the accomodation. It is just not up to scratch. Take Margate. Rundown Seafront and town. Poor accomodation.

well i agree that margate is run down.but with regard to seaside holidays week breaks being all but dead i do disagree, you only have to look at blackpool, millions of people stay there per year, all the year round,i have been there several occasions with illuminations, and the place is jammed and thats in october.what margate needs is heavy investment to attract new proprietors for shops, arcades and the council to work together to put margate back on the map.if dreamland does end up closing for good (god i hope not).margate will be finished,it will become a ghost town, and if they did build on dremalands site, there will be no going back.the council will have failed every person in the area,by selling out to more pointless shops and homes.

The days of a week's holiday in the UK are alive and well.

Four of my friends have just come back from a week in Wales. I have a week in Norfolk planned in just two weeks time, and will be in Blandford Forum for the week for the Great Dorset Steam Fair - all my holidays for the last two years have been in the UK.

The year before that we had two weeks in Florida, but don't currently have any non-UK holiday plans at all.

And before anyone tries to stereo type myself and Nicola, we are 30-40 and don't have kids to hold us back, so we could go almost anywhere.

Two years ago we had a holiday in Snowdonia- there was plenty to do, and apart from the cost of the accommodation we were spending £100 per day, all of which went into the local economy. The area was packed with families, all spending money.

Last year we went to Minehead- ditto.

East Kent could be a huge draw for tourism, but it seems that no-one is interested in this. I wonder why?

Does Jimmy Godden still have an interest in Dreamland? I thought he had sold it to some bloke in Newbury called Toby something-or-other.

Dreamland Rides

Postby micktee » 22 Jun 2005, 20:34

I feel I must comment on some of the very negative topics that are appearing on the pages of this forum, for those many people who do not know me I have been involved with Dreamland one way or another since around 1959, giving out leaflets etc in the good times, I became Advertisig & Promotions Manager in 1969 until Bemboms took over in 1981, I still have a great passion for Dreamland and I am now a Thanet District Councillor and the Mayor of Margate for which I am very honoured to be; I would ask members of the Save the Dreamland Campaign which I will support, and have many conversations with Nick, is to get the facts right about Dreamland, it is not the end..there is very positive dialogue happening with various consultants about the site and the future of Margate a town I love and lived in all my life, so please get facts straight before posting on this site, I am aware that comments are be noted, and the negative response does not help our cause!

Lots of hype and hot air their but no commitment. Where is this plan. What's in it and when will it be delivered. ?

Let me guess you will not be able to answer it other then with the usual political claptrap.

In reality there is no plan.

Bob, I don't know if you know Micktee (Mick Tomlinson)- you may have seen the scale model of Dreamland, and of the Scenic Railway which he built some years ago-

but I can assure you that there is no-one better we could hope for on the Council to help support our cause.

I realise you may be upset about the present state of Dreamland- we all are- but Mick is not the person to address your anger towards.

I must support Vince in his posting. We are all frustrated by the delays and what we see happening at Dreamland.
Unfortunately planning matters can be very long winded. It is about a year ago we presented a case at the Local Plan Inquiry, the report is still awaited and no it hasn't been delayed or sat on. When we went in we knew it would take a long time and at best be later this year. Details of that do appear on this web-site.
Other consultations are coming along and the important thing is that people respond, particularly Thanet residents, so that Thanet District Council are left in no doubt as to what the local community want.
Those of us that have long connections with Margate and care about the town and Dreamland, together with the Amusement Park enthusiasts, must also make their views known at the appropriate time. The Scenic Railway has international importance and is ideally placed in Dreamland to kick start the regeneration of Margate as holiday / short stay / day trip destination.
Being offensive to those who support us does not help the cause we have passion for.
