What A Disappointment!

The Save Dreamland Campaign was launched by Joyland Books in January 2003 and is now supported by several thousand people. This is the place to discuss all aspects of saving Margate's famous amusement park and its iconic , Grade II listed Scenic Railway, Britain's oldest roller coaster.

What A Disappointment!

Postby bri223087 » 04 Jul 2005, 08:02

Having looked at the Save Dreamland website, I was excited when we eventually decided to take a trip to Margate! But - boy, what a disappointment! I havr read with enthuisasm this website, and thought Great! Dreamland would be open this year, and all is looking good. From the 2005 section, it looked like a lot of money has been invested in rides and attractions to bring Dreamland back to what it was like years ago!

Well - when I got there it was the usual excited feeling when I stepped off the train, and could see the towering figures of G-Force and Mega Drop. Upon entering, I was shocked to see a lot of security fencing, but thought well they are trying to keep the drunks out, so thats good. Bought out tokens, and got in, and I thought - What the hell happened?!

There was no super bob ride, there was no rie that used to be at Pleaurewood Hills (My local theme park). They have turned Dreamland into a glorified fun fair, which you have to pay admission, and a bad on at that!

Is this all pat of the master plan, to run Dreamland into the ground, so no-one turns up to it and the Margate Seafront plan can go ahead? I think there is some kind of conspiracy going on here!

To close Dreamland for good would kill Margate. For a small seaside resort - there isn't eaxctly a lot to do anyways! And to take out somethign which draws people from all over Kent, and further would kill this lovely resort.

If Great Yarmouth didn't have its Pleasure Beach, I know for a fact - I would not go there - even though its about a 20 minute drive from where I live.

So come on people, we cannot let this happen. Dreamland is part of Margate, and for it to go would be awful!

I don't see why they wouldnt accept help from people. Look at Southend, it was a dive years ago, and now its one of, if not the flagship amusement park in Essex. Let's hope someone can do the same to Dreamland!

P.S. The rides that were there were great! Although expensive, hopefully next time I visit either later this year or next they will still be there, along with some additions?[/b]

I suspect that there is no real intention of trying to make Dreamland a success. Its not being advertised. Its opening hours seem erratic, there is a high entrance fee for what is know more then a travelling fair. There are hardly any rides or attractions there.

The aim of this is probable to convince Margate council that it is not viable as a fairground this then allows them to sell the site at a large profit for retail development.

It is because the operator has no real long-term incentive in the park- at most he will be here until next season's end.

It's like the difference between owning a house and renting one on a short-term lease. You are hardly going to invest much time and energy in the latter.

Dreamland needs a new *owner* if there is to be a viable future.

It is a real shame what is happening now. When the news was announced that Dreamland would open this and next year I was really excited, however it appears to have backfired.

Opening the park as a disappointing fair, with few rides and charging admission, changing the park times from those published, etc are all things that will make people think that Dreamland isn't worth saving. Customers arriving to find a closed park, or an expensive and disappointing experience will not make the effort to come back. Turning down the chances of (free) publicity does suggest that Mr Ayers does not have a long-term "dream" of what the park could be, and the current state of the place is sending out all the wrong signals.

Has this done more harm than good?

David.

erm i think u will find that at present dreamland is temporary home to the best thrill ride in the UK- top buzz 2 (after the departed top buzz 1 that is) so is lucky in that respect! as to what other attractions make up the park- hardly enough to make people return
You can't beat that top buzz feeling!
