Margate caves

Further to my last message re dreamland last sat; i also forgot to mention i called into margate caves to find it all overgrown, and no signs of opening. I asked a passer by who said it had closed down as it was unsafe, yet there were no signs etc and if it is unsafe would have thought the entrance be boarded or bricked up, because it will only be a matter of time before some kids rip the padlock of the not so secure door and go exploring inside.

Anyone with any info on the closure situation?

if kids read what you have said there proberly more than likly to go in the margate caves if you see what i mean ?

The Caves closed last September. At the time I was told there had been a chalk fall and that they would be closed until they had been made safe. I have grumbled repeatedly to the Council - who own them - that they look an absolute state and that there is no signage explaining their closure.

This week's Extra says that it will cost £48,000 to do the necessary safety work. Or £26,000 to "safely close" them, whatever that means. I'll give you one guess which option the council favours.

I imagine that "safely close them" means "brick up the entrance", in which case £26,000 sounds about right for a half-day job which has Thanet District Council's pawprints on it.


Does anyone have any further details of the exact extent of the collapse, or know if it would be possible to have an independent examination carried out?

No wonder rates are so High. I am not sure how big the access to the caves is. I assume it only has a single entrance but £26K equates to about 15 weeks of work at £50 an Hour. Must be a very slow bricky they are intending using

Of course, there is the small matter of the costs of the bricks!
