Dreamland is Closed

The Save Dreamland Campaign was launched by Joyland Books in January 2003 and is now supported by several thousand people. This is the place to discuss all aspects of saving Margate's famous amusement park and its iconic , Grade II listed Scenic Railway, Britain's oldest roller coaster.

They have certainly monitored it in the past (and phoned me up loudly and rudely demanding apologies, retractions, etc etc etc). Short shrift is what they got then, and it's what they'd get now.

2005 was a bad year for dreamland.lets hope 2006 season will be a million times better
as for harry ayers when i knew he was taking over dreamland i was full of joy and happiness,as he had a very fine reputation of running theme parks etc
harry, you have seriously damaged your reputation as well as dreamland's
dreamland will survive and someone will return dreamland to its glory days even better infact
mr g (git) sell the park to phillip miller then you will see how to run a fantastic park
jimmy godden couldnt run a bath, let alone a theme park.
victory is near,long live dreamland!

Dreamland Ride

Postby micktee » 10 Sep 2005, 23:35

The postings on the this forum, are getting a little bit out of order, speaking to Nick this week, many members are not interested in the facts about Dreamland and the Tourism of Margate, many think that they can change 'Margate' just like that; you can't.
The future for this town have never looked brighter, and Dreamland has never looked safer in the report on the local plan, that Nick has explained, and I can confirm.
So for those members of the 'Save the Dreamland Campaign' who do not know the true facts on what is happening to Margate and the Dreamland Site I sugest you keep silent on your views, you are not helping the campaign

Hot air eminates all the time from local councils. Sadly they rarely deliver. It is more often then not just that Hot Air. More often then not these councils local redevelepment schemes turn out giving you something worse then already exists. Now I may be wrong but I doubt it. You can rely on councils & politicians to make a mess of things. Thats their field of expetise. Making a mess and going 5 times over Budget. If Margate gets anything worthwhile from this redevelepment it will be a miracle. Time will tel, although unfortunatly for Margate time is not on its side. The Dreamland fiasco this year has not helped neither.

From a Visitors point of view Maragte at present has nothing to offer. Its a sad parady of what it used to be a dirty rundown ex seaside resort.

It tough but thats how visitors see Margate the few that do visit. If the Local Council & Businesses don't get off their complacent backsides there will be nothing at all left of Margates Tourist Trade.

Wake Up Margate, your sinking fast.

So what good has your posting done Bob?

Have you made any practical suggestions?
Have you added in a positive way to the campaign?
Are you doing anything good for the future of Margate?

Or are you just trying your best to knock everyone, and anything to do with Margate?
You seem to be doing everything to discredit Margate and sound like you are trying to make the point against Dreamland remaining as a theme park, using the "it's not worth it" card.

If I was moderating this board, your login wouldn't work as you don't seem to be a supporter of this campaign.

I have to support the previous postings about some of the unhelpful comments being made about Margate. It would be foolhardy to suggest there aren't problems but in order to make informed comments we have to look at some of the reasons. Just criticising the council is not the answer, yes they may have made some mistakes, particularly in the changes made to the draft Local Plan after the consulation period, but you also have to look at the regional, national and even european initiatives and funding streams that have been available; did they make use of them or were they not eligible? Have policies disadvantaged them? These would particularly affect some of the other issues in the town.

Sadly what they did wrong has happened what we have to do now is to try and influence the future as the outcomes of the Local Plan Inquiry are published and work on the Margate Masterplan proceeds. If the detractors take the trouble to read the proof of evidence prepared and delived by Nick they will see that this Campaign saw a revitalised and improved Dreamland as a catalyst for regeneration, something that will bring in tourists, their money which is spent in other places as well as Dreamland and attract further investment all of which kick starts the economy. Unfortunately this is not an overnight thing but is achievable and I suggest a look at Southport and Southend as but two examples.

This benefits us all, those that have an interest in amusements parks and their rides, those who live in Thanet and those who are connected with the area and care about it's future.

This Campaign has worked tirelessly and, particularly thanks to Nick, have been able to do so in a very professional manner as the various stages of the planning process are proceeding. The latest news from the early published sections from the Inspector's report, following the Public Inquiry, are most encouraging but I suspect there will still be a lot to do.

So to those that are making such damaging postings on this site please dont do it in some veiled way purporting to be a Campaign supporter, clearly you are anything but.

Bob, have you actually been to Margate recently? If you have you would see how nice the harbour area is looking, with many cafes, restaurants and bars opening, most offering 'al fresco' dining. I might be in the minority but I actually think Turner Contemporary has already helped to regenerate this part of the town. I wish it the very best of luck when it opens.

Yes we all seem to agree that it was not the best year for Dreamland and all realise that a committed operator could make it fantastic again. Except for you Bob, your glass is not even half empty its got nothing in it!

Gez, my girls and myself had a chat with Mick Tee and his wife at the Mayors festival over a cuppa. He is very committed to Margate and the campaign is fortunate to have him on side.

Margate does need some good quality hotels, but all this comes with time. When Dreamland and Turner Contemporary are up and running new fortunes will happen.

First of all, I should explain myself really quick. I am from the States and have never visited Dreamland or Margate. I am a lover of amusement parks and actually grew up with a Cedar Point season pass. I think the redevelopment of the property would seriously jeopardize the community which seems based off of tourism. I know Sandusky (Cedar Point's home town) is basically a ghost town in the off season. It looks promising though with the hopeful new plan. The innovative rides seem fantastic!

I was just hoping someone could explain how much the owner (I get he's trying to run Dreamland into the ground so he will be allowed to sell to developers) wants out of a sale?

How much less would he get if he just sold it as an amusement property?

Also I just thought the galloping horse ride that may come to be someday is awesome. I want to go visit Blackpool just so I can go ride the Steeplechase :)

Hi

As I have stated in other posts on this forum, Margate is not as it should be, but the council have got to sholder alot of the blame for this situation if thay had stood firm from the start and said Dreamland should remain an amuement attraction then Mr G would have ether had to continue running the park or cut his losses and sell up to another operator who would run it correctly and with vision, but any seaside resort without attractions will not get visitors, but it would seem that the council think the sort of attractions that thay think will attract visitors are shops, this is blatently not the case, there are many places people can go to shop, when thay go to the seaside people want to have fun,yes thay may walk round the shopping area of the town and buy some things as well, but inorder for you to get people in the town you have to have something to attract them there in the first place, and as good as sarah's Shell Grotto is she can not do it alone, it needs all the normal sorts of attractions that will attract visitors and one of them is the provision of decent amusement attractions including rides as well as arcades, the ancillary facilitys have to be there as too such as a good beach, toilets, places to eat, ect. But if you can get people to come in large enough numbers then all of the town will benifit and more new busnesses will come into the town as it will be seen a place where busniesses will thrive and prosper making it an attractive place to invest.

Hi Jade

I dont know the figures exactly but beleve me he would stand to make a vast amount less from selling as an amusement park, than for developemnt use, the more cyincal amongst us would say the he bought the park with the intetion of running it down and flogging off for developement all along.
