Introducing yourselves

The Save Dreamland Campaign was launched by Joyland Books in January 2003 and is now supported by several thousand people. This is the place to discuss all aspects of saving Margate's famous amusement park and its iconic , Grade II listed Scenic Railway, Britain's oldest roller coaster.

Hey Alan,

Cool hobbies too. I am not the only one!

Us two Vince's are diving into a railway thread off the board, so we don't clog it up. Me thinks that's what I am doing now though!

Sorry guys, better go and fit a radiator in my workshop before it starts getting colder today.

Vince.

What would you're best outcome of Dreamland be?: To be returned to something like it was when Godden bought it.or alternatively a museum for old rides that may be lost forever, Thinking Vikinger at Blackpool and the Texas tornado that was at Morecambe
Would you prefer new owners?: Yes, preferably a family run outfit, The best parks in the world are all family owned and run i.e. Knobels, Holiday World, Blackpool etc.

Eeeeh, my first car was a Mk1 Austin A40, registration 6083 EL, I paid £8 for her, light blue she was. I was 16 so this would have been about 1976.

I can still remember the registration number of my Dad's first car, a Ford Popular registration OLN 143

Keep them kingpins well-greased Sarah, Farinas used to eat them like mad. And also, you should buy Practical Classics magazine, it's essential reading for anyone owning an older car.

To be honest Vince, I try to avoid Practical Classics. I am always irresistably drawn to the Car Sales pages which usually results in me buying a car that isn't nearly as much fun, as practical or as reliable as an A40. But I can't resist fins!

This is my third A40, punctuated with a Singer Vogue (oh it was beautiful, but god it was awful to drive, almost a relief when it got nicked), an MGB GT (a lemon), a Toyota MR2 (I was beguiled by its flippy headlights your honour) and a Mark II Cortina (I can get a push off anyone, anywhere).

I am really, really boring on this subject. No one in my household is interested in old bangers so I am starved of kingpin conversations. But I'll stop now!

Outcome Dreamland : To be as brill as the 70s, I thought there was no
where like it when I was little!

New Owners : Absolutely yes, but ones who want to manage it
as a thriving amusement park not run it into the

[Speedway (The Mighty Rye House Rockets),
I used to follow the mighty Canterbury Crusaders and really miss that. I have had many a good day at hoddesden and a few drunken nights with a certain Kelvin Mullarkey, when he was at Canterbury.
We had some good tomes following the team around the country, is it really 20 years since they finished?

Name Richard Burroughs
Age 37
Location Reading

Hobbies Amusement Parks, Computers, Video Games, Reading Football Club, quizzes

Best Outcome for Dreamland A new long-term owner who is prepared to invest in new rides and attractions, offering a good selection of thrill rides, family rides and childrens rides thus catering for all. Philip Miller seems to be the obvious choice as he has managed things superbly at Southend making it one of the most profitable parks in the country.

Do you want new owners Obviously yes. Mr G has no intention of running or investing in the park as he wants to retire. So they need someone with experience in this field to come in and run it.

Hobbies
Music, art, pubs, food, rollercoasters, history.

Best Outcome for Dreamland
The only outcome is for it to be even better than it ever has been. Modern, great rides and theming - wrapped around the Scenic Railway and revitalising one of the most beautiful but neglected beaches in the south east of England. Anything other than that equates to the death of Margate.

Do you want new owners
yes.

Hobbies : Amusement Parks, Cinema, Literature, Retro Computer Games

Best Outcome for Dreamland :

Retention of Scenic Railway in the context of a substantial amusement park with owners who are committed to making it work.

I have visited Margate twice in my life during stays with friends in London and the main reason both times was to ride the scenic railway. The first time was before the threat of closure, the second was during an early weekend in 2004 (when it turned out that the park was shut anyway).

Personally speaking, I would visit Margate a few times a year during trips to London if Dreamland and the Scenic were still operating in a family friendly manner, but not at all otherwise (although I did enjoy the Shell Grotto on my second visit).

Do you want new owners : Yes, especially having seen the contrast with Adventure Island at Southend.

As I've made my first posting in God knows how long, thought I'd fill in who I am....

Name: Ian Nye

Location: Whitstable (although new job in Feb means I'm moving to Cambridge, so Dreamland will no longer be my local park)

Hobbies: apart from theme parks, directing, singing and playing in various community music and drama groups, and recently become addicted to Su Doku and Killer Su Doku!!

What would you're best outcome of Dreamland be?: Return to form a la Bembom days where hundreds of vitiors came by train from far afield

Would you prefer new owners?: hmmm, let me think about that for a moment!! I would love to see someone acheive the above

Location: Westbrook, moved back after a 10 year gap

Hobbies: Music, music and music

What would you're best outcome of Dreamland be?: I have fond memories of Dreamland, from going there as a child and also from working there one Summer. I would be be extremely upset if the Scenic was torn down and turned into housing - what a waste that would be, it must stay! As for the rest of the land, I'm not sure how it should be used. I would love to see some more rides go in. I would also like to see the land managed by someone with a passion for the area. They need to be creative and be able to provide something that caters for both the tourist and the locals. It's a big area of land, how about some festivals, fayres, displays etc.

Would you prefer new owners?: Of course.
