Listed Building Applications Submitted

Postby Nick » 04 Jan 2006, 21:07

These are for the demolition of several buildings, including the Park Amusements building (formerly the Buffet). There is a report on the Save Dreamland News page:

http://joylandbooks.com/scenicrailway/news.htm

You can view the applications online and submit comments to the council on them. Full details on the News page.

Although there is a good case for refusal, I am very worried, given the recent statements by the Chief Executive of Thanet DC, that approval will be given without much debate.

I may be proved wrong...but it looks a worrying move.

David.

I take it if they do go to accept it we can voice our oppions and comments to stop them right? Or is it they can accept then start straight away. Anyhow I see what David means by them just ignoring us like they have so far but this would be breaking the policy they made up right :? ? so slightly different

Nick has posted information on the news page on how to read all the information about the planning applications and to make observations.

Now is the time to object not when they have been approved. You can do this on-line or write a letter to Thanet Council. As you live locally you can talk to your Councillors as well.

David makes a very valid point and it is worrying, hopefully Thanet's Councillors will be equally concerned at the suggestion they dont make the decisions they were elected to but merely follow the instructions of their employees.

Hi All

I have just raised my objection with the council via the website hope you all do the same as we need to keep the pressure on the council to win this once and for all.

On my visit to Margate late last November I was rather startled by the quite rapid demolition of several buildings to the right just behind the seafront amusement arcades etc. This latest application seems somewhat sinister to me.

Like others have said, I think we must all make our objections known to the council via their website or by mail. As soon as I get the chance I will send mine in. Looks like we'll have to keep a very close watch on developments here.

The ukplaning web site dose not like my computer seem very veru slow and have the pages will not display,

Dispite listed status the buildings can still be demolished if they wee grade1 then there would be a much bigger hurdle to get permision to demolish them, as they are grade 2 the local council can diside i beleve.

An aplication has been submitted to demolish a section of Southend Pier, this too is a grade2 listed structure, however the demolition is of the fire damaged section which needs to be removed before the re-building workcan begin.

A stunning photo was published yesterday sowing 100's of starfish in the debris field under the pier.

I could post it up if anyone wants to sea  it

I undestand that these buildings can be demolished but i just hope that if enough of us go to ukplanning and object they will stop this happening.

These Building would interfere with the redevelopment of the site and are of no architectural or historic merit. The building are in very poor condition and are occupying space that could be better utilized. The Sub Station serves no purpose at all and the toilets do not meet current statutary requirements so could never be used.

Ok just a quick question to people who have posted comments already... Are you going thru them all 1 by 1 and posting comments or just going to one and doing it all there?

There seems to be some misunderstandings on here, yes it is possible to demolish listed buildings but only in certain, quite special, circumstances. Read Nick's information. It certainly doesn't look as if the reasons for wanting to demolish the Dreamland buildings meet the criteria and it needs saying.

The important thing is that everybody who cares about Dreamland does something about it. If you cant handle the on-line response system write a letter to the Thanet District Council Planning Department. You dont have to live in Thanet to do something, listed buildings are important beyond their local area.

The Demolition of these buildings is required for the succesful redevelopment of the site. Know of the buildings are of an merit. The sub station serves no puposes at all. The toilet block does not meet current legislation and all the buildings are in very poor condition. The clearance of these building will provide more space for the redevelopment of the site. Currently with these buildings in place redevelopment cannot go ahead this leaves the site in its curent run down and unviable condition

The problem you have got is that national policy and the Thanet Local Plan (adopted and emerging) both say that demolition will not be permitted without detailed plans for what is going to replace the buildings. That is fairly standard practice across the UK, and I don't see any reason why Dreamland should be treated as a special case, especially when the reasons for the demolitions given by the planning agents is to assist in the "short term management" of the site.

As I said on the News page, it may well be that eventually it is decided that demolition of some or all of the buildings is the way forward, but at the moment the applications don't even cross the first hurdle.

If people want to comment on the applications but don't like the online option, you can write to the Council. The Council address is:

Planning Applications Team
Development Services
Thanet District Council
PO Box 9
Cecil Street
Margate
Kent
CT9 1XZ

You will need to quote the reference numbers: L/TH/05/1593, L/TH/05/1594, L/TH/05/1595, L/TH/05/1596 and L/TH/05/1597. One letter will suffice, as long as it is stated that it applies to all five applications.

If doing the online approach, it is probably best to respond to each application separately.
