Myrtle Beach: Another Coastal US Amusement Park Under Threat

Postby porterm » 12 Apr 2006, 01:36

Hi all,

Just thought people might be interested in this below, which I found on the European Coaster Club's message list:

(I've added my name to their petition. Anyone else is welcome to do so).

If you aren't already aware, 2006 is scheduled to be the last season for the
Myrtle Beach Pavilion and it's rides, including the park's wood coaster.

The following message is from my friend Dennis McNulty, the man responsible
for designing Hurricane Category 5 at Myrtle Beach's Pavilion, among many
other wood coasters. Please read it and consider signing the petition, and
forwarding this on to others. http://www.PetitionOnline.com/mbpav/

******

I would hate to see the Hurricane Category 5 coaster I had spent years
designing with the wonderful group from Custom Coasters share the same
senseless corporate fate as the remarkable Texas Cyclone recently. Please
help to voice your opinion in this online petition to save this seaside
masterpiece. With enough outcry, maybe the municipality will consider taking
over and running the facility instead of facing a potential dip in tourism.
If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider signing
yourself.

Please forward this to anyone who loves Myrtle Beach, Architecture and
Engineering, Roller
Coasters and Amusement Parks, steel, timber, or grease.
Thanks,

Dennis McNulty

Here's what I submitted.

Tear down condos - build amusement parks! Why on earth would you destroy a
well run and managed park with yet more retail development? Communities need
amusement parks to augment and supplement other development. This "gem"
should be preserved. If money becomes more important than preserving this
treasured spot then: 1) Document all the rich history of this site as a park
2) Sell the rides to parks who appreciate them 3) Pray your retail scheme
works. If it doesn't, you will have ruined what took a lifetime to build,
let alone the memories future generations will be denied!

Signed and submitted.
Thanks for posting that.

OK, I ran across the Six Flags Houston site which was last updated in 2004.
http://www.sixflagshouston.com/rides/viewride.php?id=3

This site lists the rides at the park as defunce, including the wooden Texas Cyclone (1976)
http://www.bannister.org/coasters/parks ... oworld.htm

What happened to it? Demolished, or deconstructed and stored?
The PTC trains?

Many thanks for all your submissions. It looks great to see a more international mix on the park's on-line petition now.
