Local Paper-Margate Waterfront

The Save Dreamland Campaign was launched by Joyland Books in January 2003 and is now supported by several thousand people. This is the place to discuss all aspects of saving Margate's famous amusement park and its iconic , Grade II listed Scenic Railway, Britain's oldest roller coaster.

Local Paper-Margate Waterfront

Postby Lou » 13 Apr 2006, 18:28

Looking at the local paper-Isle of Thanet Extra. there is an article (front page) and following on into pages 2 & 3,that talks about 'The Margate waterfront concept'. Potential Turner Centre, plus 200-bedroomed hotel, plus revamp for the Winter Gardens.
While I do not necessarily disagree with any of this, there is a distinct lack of any mention at all of Dreamland......
I am however posting for info to other members of SDC, the Margate Renewal Partnership, consists of Thanet District Council, the South East of England Development Agency, English Partnerships, The Arts Council, English Heritage and The Lottery Fund (apparently they are all working together to revitalise the town).
Perhaps they could all work to revitalise and restore Dreamland

This episode really is becoming more and more like a real Turnoff Centre in my book. I've never really been much of an Art fan; I went to the new Paul Getty Centre in Los Angeles a few years ago with a friend and must say that we weren't that impressed. Apart from the quite radical modern building on the hill with its unusual patrons' train to take one to the entrance I really couldn't appreciate much of what was on offer. Unless you like European period internal decorating fashions, that was the only other real distraction to the framed exhibits.

Maybe one day I'll suddenly see the real value of art form. I really can't say that I'll be holding my breath though.

I suppose the only good thing this continuing saga does though is continue to give Thanet some welcome media coverage, even though I don't really have the slightest personal interest. However, if the attraction, whenever built and opened, draws hoardes of future new visitors then I cannot really knock it. As we've said before though it can only ever really be a complementary attraction. (Strangely enough the original concept was supposed to have opened by 2004 I believe the BBC South East News report said last week). Perhaps it was just too ambitious.

As for art galleries and such, going upscale doesn't seem to me the best way to go. The area isn't upscale, so dotting it with a few art galleries isn't going to cut it. Art galleries are fine, but they aren't a big enough draw (in and of themselves) with mass appeal unless the area is known for a specific type of popular artwork. I think the combination of seaside and a restored Dreamland would be an excellent draw.
I also think many types of galleries and boutiques would benefit from a lovely Dreamland. The overflow foot traffic would be significant.

I wish I knew more about the area so I could offer more.
