Ideas for next fundraising event

The Save Dreamland Campaign was launched by Joyland Books in January 2003 and is now supported by several thousand people. This is the place to discuss all aspects of saving Margate's famous amusement park and its iconic , Grade II listed Scenic Railway, Britain's oldest roller coaster.

Ideas for next fundraising event

Postby DaveD » 08 May 2006, 12:07

Hello people,

Nick/Sarah, Vince and I are merely pawns in the Save Dreamland Hierarchy but, after the joyous evening that was the Save Dreamland Disco, we'd be happy to offer our services again in any capacity.

Question is, what do we do or is there anything in the pipeline? Does anybody have any feasible ideas where we could drum up some cold, hard cash? A Corned Beef Eating Contest or sponsored Chase The Badger? Maybe amongst the 14,000 campaigners, there are several Lap Dancers or Stripping Fireman who'd be happy to volunteer their services in the name of Theme Park Preservation?

Personally speaking, I think a Beach Party would be perfect but that really would take some organizing, plus the necessary temporary licences from our friends at TDC would be a bit of a struggle, unless we use the patented Godden Brown Bag technique.

Keeping the reigns in on a beach party might be fairly difficult.
Still, it's an idea.
I'll think about it for a while.

The next event in the pipeline is our attendance at the Preston Rally in June. This is more about profile raising and signing up new members than fundraising - also, of course, we love getting Billie out of her shed! However, I think we will be running a raffle there, given the unmitigated success of that venture in Chatham - and pending the organiser's approval.

Personally speaking, I'm a sucker for organising events, particularly parties of some description. However, it's a time-consuming business so we need to plan ahead.

I'd like to organise another Dreamland Disco, this time in Thanet.

Hi all

Well how about you get one of the dunking stool things for rally and see if you can get say godden, any conservative member of the TDC, any member of waterbridge, or the pist de resitance bob to sit in the stool, I am sure that you would raise lots of cash for the cause for the chance to dunk any of the above in some freezing cold water.

CLiff C

Not that any of them will actually volanteer to sit there

Have a vintage car show on a Sunday afternoon.
Charge 5 pounds per entry and give away a nice little plaque as a prize.
Have 2. Judges choice and a people's choice.
I know a guy in Ramsgate who'd bring his excellent Herbie replica.

I'm really clutching at straws with this one, but it's an idea all the same...

A Karaoke/Pop Idol style competition near Dreamland???

It is a shame it couldn't be held on site but basically hold a karaoke compeition style thingy, but get people to pay to enter, only a small fee mind. You could also have people donating in order to get a prominent Campiagn Member to get up and sing or something. Basically say if you can raise a certain amount then so and so would have to get up and sing.

Like I say clutching at straws but hey...

Just wondered when, or if we are attending the Preston Steam Rally (I believe it was planned to be this month).

My diary suddenly seems to be getting a bit filled up at the moment so I just wanted to try and forward plan a bit!

Also, slightly off topic, but does anyone know when the Jazz Festival was taking place - believe you mentioned that Sarah.

Martin

PS I was planning to support the Margate Air Show but this weekend looks a bit busy for me at present. (I thought it was taking place over the seafront before by the way - not sure of the venue yet but I know they're charging admission) - shame it couldn't have been a freebie like Southend's successful event.

If we do organise an enthusiastes meet up some time along the lines of the Coaster Force one I'm sure we could get a raffle together. It sounds like the disco one was a success and I expect a lot of people on here would donate something even if it was something plain like choclates or book tokens

I can confirm that we will indeed be attending the Preston Steam Rally again this year. There will be several campaigners at the stand throughout the weekend, including Susan Marsh, Dave Collard, Sarah Vickery and me (not all of us will be there all of the time, but you should normally find at least three of us!). We will posting an item about the Rally on the News page over the next couple of days.

The event is on 24 and 25 June, details here:
