Whats Up?

The Save Dreamland Campaign was launched by Joyland Books in January 2003 and is now supported by several thousand people. This is the place to discuss all aspects of saving Margate's famous amusement park and its iconic , Grade II listed Scenic Railway, Britain's oldest roller coaster.

Whats Up?

Postby Strongbow55 » 24 Nov 2006, 03:47

The campaign seems to have dried up in the forum
is there anything we should be doing during the winter? IE what has happened with the fence will the park be open next year? should we be making sure the scenic gets maintainance during a winter?
topics seem to be more directed to non dreamland topics at present
should the campaign be looking to put up council candidates?
heck I dont know but it seems this forum is only busy when the season is open :?
the winter is the best time to actually get things going
I honestly dont give a fig about southport I would leave that to save southport campaign
we have enough problems trying to save dreamland rather than every threatened coaster in the UK
OK I am off my Ass what do I do the new season is less than 16 weeks away do we have a new season or is dreamland closed for good?
or have we been sidetracked by the cyclone
the scenic is our priority its up to others to save southport

I think it's important to look out for all historic rides and indeed all historic buildings FULL STOP But yes I agree that it's important to keep the Save Dreamland Campaign going.

In regards to whether Dreamland is or is not to re-open I think it's fair to say that this is out of our control, and the same may go to whether or not the Scenic gets maintanence. Nevertheless I think there's things we can be getting on with. The fence is a perhaps a good example, although again I'm not sure how much there is in our power. Hopefully someone more in the know will answer that one. Maybe it's time for some more letters to the paper about it?

Ya I must admit that I think we have all got slightly side tracked but that's mainly because not much has gone on. I think the fence issue is the way to go at the moment.

If the local authority is taking enforcement action that does take time...

I would say that other threatened amusement parks are directly relevant to the fate of Dreamland, and as has been pointed out the current issue of Private Eye carries an article on both parks under the same strapline.

Anyone not wishing to read about Southport's amusement park is of course entirely at liberty to ignore that particular thread.

The Save Dreamland campaign is a long, slow drawn-out fight and there will not be news as such every day or even every week.

i have to agree

there is very few seaside amustment parks around the uk now, with morecambe disappearing and the rotunda and now southports pleasureland and if im correct also the american adventure are all closed
its nice to see there are many people out there fighting for these rides futures

the cyclone in southport was 70 years old and well worth presevering, but no being torn down like it doesnt matter
people maybe specualtating of whats to happen to the site, some saying a theme park shoppin centre etc.well it wont be a theme park thats for sure, when bpb decided to close pleasureland down, bpb and the sefton council both know whats going to happen to that site, and us the public are always the last to know.

i know that "EAS" has worked very hard trying very hard to save the cyclone and various other old rides at southport

same with dreamland if nick laister hadnt worked so hard dreamland and the scenic railway would be a distant memory already and dreamland turned into yet another shopping centre or something not needed

im glad that other people are getting involved with saving various parks and rides.this way it build up a bigger picture of whats happening around the uk and how vital it is to work together as a team to prevent more disasters like the cyclone being demolished

there is a great bunch of people who work hard behind the scenes trying to save dreamland like nick and sarah, and also other parks too

remember we have our resident joker "bob" who comes on the site and never has a good word to say about anything, and why he bothers coming on this site just to belittle everyone and everything is beyond me.the "man" is not worth bothering with.most of his posts are nonsense anyway

we have jim douglas all the way over in the usa,who posts regularly and takes and interests in other uk parks as well dreamland, and its nice to know that people thousands of mles away are supporting dreamlands and other uk parks and help preserve all older roller coasters and other rides
we should all work together to save dreamland of course but i think its great that many people are learning of the campaign while trying there hardest to save other sites as well
its good to be updated about southport, and other parks like the rotunda etc, this way we know what happening in other parts of the country
i for one would like to see the continuation of other news from other uk parks and parks under threat.because once these parks have gone they will NEVER be replaced and that will be a tragic loss

BTW I am NOT Bob but i do think that if a small group detracts from its original cause ie save dreamland and I believe that is the title of this particular forum then perhaps we are in danger of trying to save every park in the country and old coaster then end up losing the park this forum set out to save
and that would be sad!!
maybe it would be an idea to have a save Southport forum instead of using the save Dreamland one.
I am saddened by any loss of any seaside recreational facility but IMO its dreamland first
we still do not know If Dreamlandwill be open in less than 16 weeks time but we do know Southport will not
the priority lies with keeping Dreamland open
The scenic may be saved by being listed but it is only saved as a museum piece it does not actually have to be working or maintained if it is not maintained then it cant carry passengers without a test and the owners are not legally obliged to test it
If a developer chose to create shops etc the scenic would make a nice
piece of art to be surrounded by homes and shops creating a unique selling point pushing the price up of the dwellings
we have to save the park ....

As a listed structure, the owners are legally required to maintain it.

Actually, no - not until it starts to be really unsafe or an eyesore... the law is a bit of a grey area here. Hence the national Buildings at Risk Registers compiled by English Heritage and SAVE Britain's Heritage.

In that case the local authority can force it to be made safe, or even step in with a compulsory purchase order.

But there's a difference betwen safe as a structure and operational.

There are also issues regarding buildings listed as curtilage and also anything affecting the setting of a listed structures which may be relevant to Dreamland however.

This section of the forum I agree is about Dreamland - threads about Southport should be on the Amusement Park section, but surely this forum in its entirety is about more than just Dreamland?

However, some topics cross over.

I add also that the Cyclone campaign has sharpened the focus at national level amongst people at the DCMS and EH regarding how tiny and how vulnerable our historic coaster (and wider seaside amusement) heritage actually is. The spinover for the Scenic Railway can only be positive.

There are some historic coasters which may not be listable for various reasons, and that makes the Scenic now ever more important.

Believe me - some of those of us battling for Cyclone will be battling for the Scenic too if anything threatens it.

There's other stuff at Southport of interest apart from Cyclone I add!

The problem with Cyclone was that demolition work had already begun when EH got round to assessing it. I also know that the listing inspector had really not all the correct historical information to hand and got certain information wrong.

Time was not on our side on this one.

Hi.
Yes, the Cyclone tragedy was a current and ongoing situation and very relevant to Dreamland. It shows just how fast a lease holder or owner can come in and start screwing things up.
Although it ended poorly, many, many valuable lessons were learned in the process by EAS of who to contact and how to go about it.
In a country as small as yours, it makes a whole lot of sense to keep tabs on similar situations just so concerned citizens can get a feel for how they play out and what to expect. Had they not been playing a game of trying to catch up, the result may have been better. Now, though, there's a better chance of cutting nasty actions off before they begin, because a few people now know what to look for and how to go about stopping it. Much time was lost in the learning process.

The Cyclone was operation one day, and being torn down a couple days later. Sites and owners have to be monitored constantly for activity.
What happened there could happen to Dreamland.

Anyway, it might be worthwhile to find some people higher up who'd be interested in seeing Dreamland made into an absolute showpiece. Someone call Price Charles. He's into all that stuff. Proper investment in Dreamland might seem like a big chunk of change, but long term, the benefits to the town would be overwhelming.
