1234567890's Margate Another View

The Save Dreamland Campaign was launched by Joyland Books in January 2003 and is now supported by several thousand people. This is the place to discuss all aspects of saving Margate's famous amusement park and its iconic , Grade II listed Scenic Railway, Britain's oldest roller coaster.

I think the whole point is that Margate should be different, we need to earn the tourist £ again. Thanet District Council have lost sight of that, and seem to be pinning their hopes on the Turner Centre in an attempt to gain a "better class of visitor". Whereas, as everybody knows, nobody is interested in the Turner Centre.

Planning Fail.

I too love British tree species and we have many parks in Margate where they can be seen, Dane Park for example, my local park.

There are hopes that this Victorian fountain can be preserved in the future.

People have always visited Margate to see something different to their everyday lives and so while I support the restoration of things which have always drawn people to Margate, I see no problem in mixing that with contemporary ideas.

Certainly, in the photos I posted above, Southend-on-Sea and Great Yarmouth look like they are doing distinctly better than Margate right now.

Southend's Marine Parade is undergoing a £7million refeb at presnt it is due to be finishe dat the end of March, the road has been made narrower so that the prom can be expanded, a new water feature, cafe and walkways are being laid down.

The old "rope" illuminations and lamp post fix units were all life expired and needed to be completeyly overhauled so were removed a number of years ago, they are being replaced as part of the City beach scheme with 100ft tall lighting towers.

Seen on a nice hot sunny day just look at the white sands...

The towers will be illuminated and project pattens, pictures and even words on to the ground.

They have not met with widespred approval in all quaters with some stating that they have completly blocked the sea view for drivers... Should they not be watching the road! and they want them torn down and the old rope light put back, dispite the fact they the new towers are cheaper to run and more eco friendly.

I like them,

Nice, very Festival of Britain 1951 certainly more different than conventional lamp posts, example of style can be found outside the Royal festival hall London. Of course there reproduction now, original ones were rip out years ago. Situated in the right place they can make a place look unique as long as it’s not copy over and over, monotonously in other towns.
It is difficult to be different when everybody copies especially in a globalize world. Margate was the first of many things but has been copied and taken over. The only thing they can’t compete with is history it’s self that is one of Margate strengths. I believe in contemporary designs and historical design. Historical designs should be kept at any costs because they complement the contemporary and make a place unique.

We'll be visiting Southend again this year, it will be good to see the new lighting in action, I will post some video of it on YouTube.

Seems a shame that we have to drive to Southend to spend money that we would prefer to spend in Margate but I'm sure Thanet District Council know best...

For anyone who has never been there, Southend is a perfect example of what Margate could be, given better custody. A town rammed full of Londoners spending money.

The current batch of works are due to be completed at the end of March.

Currently major road improvement schemes at, Progress Road, Cuckoo Corner, Victoria Gateway (Victoria Circus) and City beach (Marine Parade).

Below is the information about each project.

Progress Road
Progress Road is a vital junction accessing the Business Park and Southend. With over 60,000 vehicles a day on the A127 at Progress Road , the junction is renowned as a local bottleneck for travelling in and out of Southend. That's why some £5 million is being spent on making arrival into the Town a more pleasant experience. The new layout will provide a boost for businesses and residents in the surrounding area, making journeys quicker and more reliable.

Cuckoo Corner
This location is one of the worst bottle necks in the borough. State-of-the-art computer technology will be introduced that will constantly update traffic signals at the junction. This means that as traffic builds up in one direction the signals can be altered to reduce long queues. Improvements to the junction will see a whopping 400 hours per day saved by drivers queuing at the junction in peak-time traffic.

Victoria Gateway
The 'front door' of Southend needs a major overhaul to improve traffic flow and improve the town's appearance to visitors. The roundabout in front of the station is nearly 50 years old and can't take any more traffic at peak times. The new layout aims to address these problems and also improve the experience for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users, without having a significant impact on traffic. A new public space linking the station with the town centre will also be created, replacing the existing roundabout with a signal controlled junction.

City Beach (Marine Parade)
The plan is to encourage visitors to make more use of the town's famous seafront and stay longer. State-of-the-art digital lighting columns will be a centrepiece of the project, helping to extend the day into the evening. Residents and visitors will also be able to enjoy a new landscaped area, complete with a refreshing fountain. There will also be improved access to the beach, as well as new footpaths and cycle facilities.

If you know Southend the part between the Pier & Kursaal is the section under going the make over, it is hoped the if finding can be found it extend the scheme up to the site of the demolished corporation loading pier.

There are/were plans to build a new pier at Southend much shorter than Southend pier though! the proposed pier will/would be the same foot print as the Corporation Loading Pier and be home to a high class restaurant.

Tourist map of Margate in 2012

I recall someone mentioning joint advertising at each attraction. I feel having a poster advertising places and a map would help boost tourist.

Eg: this can be improved.

I have to admit it that thats a pretty good idea. Having allmost "joint advertising" between all the different attractions in margate. It should boost tourism and would link all the attractions up to make them seem more organised so to speak.
