What A Disappointment!

The Save Dreamland Campaign was launched by Joyland Books in January 2003 and is now supported by several thousand people. This is the place to discuss all aspects of saving Margate's famous amusement park and its iconic , Grade II listed Scenic Railway, Britain's oldest roller coaster.

A Plan

The thing is for dream land to become its best as it used to be they need to find an owner willing to do everything he can to the park not just a few new rides and thats all ya getting the save dreamland campaign should all get together get a lottery grant of a few million and do the place up so well that dreamland wouldn't know what hit it. a bit of organisation wouldn't hurt Save Dreamland Campaign get together and fight for what you LOVE BEST, need help just ask Sky News would advertise for ya look what they was going to do. Great idea or what!

If it was as simple as raising a few million quid I would have spent the last two years sitting in a bath full of baked beans, or repeatedly getting my hair shaved off, or doing a sponsored silence (that last one would be quite popular).

There are people out there willing to pay the amusement park market value for Dreamland and those people have all experience and passion you could wish for - and would make a fantastic job of transforming the place, and Margate around it, into a first-class tourism destination.

But until the council makes it ab-so-lute-ly crystal clear that Dreamland has to stay as an amusement park, the site's value is inflated - in short, it's worth much more while there's any possibility that you could build all over it. And that prices out all those people who want to run an amusement park.

Apologies for stating the obvious, it just needs an airing every now and then.

Totally agree with your post Sarah. I was wanting to reply to some of these posts that clearly have not looked through the Campaign site and do not understand the situation at Dreamland.

Unforunately, as with most things in life, it boils down to just one thing money. Tradition, loyalty and public preference mean nothing if they don't return a nice profit. And all the willing park operators in the world are outpriced if in competition with property development.
TDC need to make themselves clear of their commitments, whether to retaining the park as a park, or more empty shops and bland houses.

The Thing is Even if they do sell the park, they can't get rid of the Scenic Railway as it is a listed rides which means it can never be removed so they aint going to build houses or shops around a rollercoaster it Just wouldn't look right or sound right, the campaigners should get together for a meeting with the council and express there veiws properly by planning everything they want to happen and to show what they are going to do with the park and what the council will get out of i.(bribary) (Sorry Can't Really spell)

Being a listed building does not mean that the Scenic Railway can never be removed, but there has to be very good reason to remove it. One of hurdles is to offer the site at the market value of its current use, which we are fairly certain would result in an amusement park operator acquiring the site. We certainly know people would buy and operate the ride.

Representatives of the campaign have met the council on many occasions. If you go to the news page then read back through the last year or so of the campaign, you will see that we have met with the council many times. We have actually met with them on other occasions privately with theme park operators.

We have also already made a number of "properly planned" submissions to the council (all of which can be downloaded from the site: go to the front page of www.savedreamland.co.uk). We have even appeared formally at the public inquiry. All our formal representations have been supported by members' own excellent submissions, which have made all the difference in raising the profile of the issue. The profile of the Campaign is now raised and Dreamland is regularly referred to in council documents in ways that we are increasingly happy with. But we need to keep plugging away to make sure that decision makers don't forget that we are here and that we are not going away. We will therefore continue to make representations to the council at the appropriate time. If you register to join the mailing list (email nick@joylandbooks.com), we will notify you when there is an opportunity to get involved.
