Dreamland not opening this year

The Save Dreamland Campaign was launched by Joyland Books in January 2003 and is now supported by several thousand people. This is the place to discuss all aspects of saving Margate's famous amusement park and its iconic , Grade II listed Scenic Railway, Britain's oldest roller coaster.

^ I'd guess at no. Its probably mostly to do with money, it usually is.

Council meetings open to the public? They should be.

I can't believe there isn't public money available for this kind of thing.

Maybe some local or national interest would be willing to sponsor the place.

There should be lottery funds made available to repair the scenic
but Jim with most large companies here they talk the talk but wont put money into anything or sorry I should say they wont put money into MRC pockets to maintain the scenic when a very rich company has the money to maintain their own responsibility IE the scenic
If the scenic was taken out of private ownerhip there would be no end of grants and every bar etc in Margate would probably have a charity box to help maintain the ride and the scenic would probably end up in tip top condition maintained by volunteers
The problem alas is that the scenic is on waterbridges property and as long as i have a hole in my **** I can see no way they will allow that to happen
The ADIPS is due in April and although MRC say they hope to have the machine open for the summer who the heck is replacing the timbers rotten and worn? The Webbs were doing that last February!
working day and night. The Webbs and
Us Tennants who offered a :substandard selection of equiptment: last year( I am not rich and I had equiptment on site ALL PAID FOR ) at least kept the scenic open and maintained for many to enjoy during 2006.
So there is something in the favour of showmen who know how to keep a ride operating under most circumstances especially when its a weekend and all the 9 to 5 workers 5 days a week expect it to be running
try calling out an engineer on a Saturday or Sunday to fix it it wont happen until a Monday. If you use British workmen
Having the showmen on site guaranteed that it would be operational as eveyone works as a team regardless of time or day of the week
no mention is ever made of double time or I have to go at midnight
you dont clock watch on a fairground
now thats all gone.....What a shame

Lottery funds aren't available to repair something privately owned, and to get them is not a simple matter. All sorts of conditions apply. There aren't all manner of grants available, believe me.

Interesting though about transport issues - when they are suggesting it should become a commuter town with housing on the Dreamland site!

And as for pie in the sky people who think that unless millions are spent annually on ever larger and newer rides etc then a place isn't worth visiting - I agree, they are the death knell of family parks. It's not what everyone wants, but extreme rides seem to be the macho thing to demand.

The Scenic Railway over the last several years has deteriated considerable. As a listed structure it is limited as to what can be done to repair it. The costs of repairs would also be very high. In it's current condition the ride is not safe to operated and would not be granted a safety certificate.

Given the great age of the ride and it's historic importance it is now better to take the ride out of service and maintain it as a static structure. This will reduce the amount of further deteriation of the ride.

LOL glad to see your back Bob. Firstly if it was just left out of course service and left as a static structure this would no longer make it the scenic railway. Secondly if your saying they cant repair the scenic since it's listed that a complete lie, otherwise what's the point in getting it listed. Last of all I'm sure it wouldn't cost that much and since Mr Hunter has already said he wants the scenic to be open this year, this must mean that he's willing to repair it to the correct standard.

Basically the Scenic Railway has only "deteriated considerable" since you took it away from Dave Collard, so there's your answer Barr.....er, Bob.

I'm curious as to where you get the idea from that as a listed structure, it would be illegal to carry out such maintenance as would be required to obtain an ADIPS safety certificate.

Have you been drinking, "Bob"?

as usual "Bob" is talking out of his backsde

the scenic railway isnt safe???

right so thats why they are going to open it this summer huh? so you reckon waterbridge aint goinna open it.well why would they tell the public they are opening it.as usual bob yr full of ****

ok so work on it may cost some money, but doesnt everything to repair

well look at blackpool etc with wooden roller coasters that run a lot more than dreamlands at the present time running at least 12 hours a day during peak season. and blackpool woodies are considerable longer,do they think there coasters are not viable?

answer is no.
you only have to look at blackpools big dipper that during the winter the big dipper has been repainted and repaired, but i dont see them moaning about the cost

Also the usa and germany etc who have plenty of woodies which are properly cared for with people that actually care and that are not all money grabbing idiots

its a shame a grown man like "bob" has to hide and hasnt got the balls to reveal who he really is or even explain his posts and his knowledge of how he gets his information from

i just wish "bob" could be taken out of service

I only wish they would let us maintain the scenic over the winter I am sure many would volunteer to do basic stuff like paint which is essential to keeping the scenic in operable condition or in a condition which would save time on getting the machine ready for the scenic fans to ride during the summer many could track walk reporting any faults so they could be fixed anyone could oil the track with old diesel to preserve it from the weather
any delay in basic maintainance means a delay in getting it open
There are many members of this forum that would do virtually anything to ensure the scenic remained open....however many of us cant afford to buy it but we can spare a few hrs now and again to ensure that it is kept up together and any little problems are sorted BEFORE the test man arrives.
If we dont save the scenic I am afraid we wont save dreamland
The main structure replacements are made from Douglas fir (very expensive) and there were many sections replaced by the webbs during last winter
The peeling paint I was told is deliberate.. as bemboms used the wrong paint to paint the ride as it was silicon based and did not allow the wood to breath causing problems therefore it was deemed ok to allow the paint to peel to let air to the wood as water used to get trapped between the paint and the woodwork causing rot rather than strip and repaint
I do not know if this is right or not it is only what i was told by a waterbridge employee while I was pulling down my machines in Sept.

Of course he's talking out of his backside - listing doesn't prevent repair. Like for like doesn't even require LBC, although keeping the Conservation Officer informed is always a good thing.

Ignore him. I suspect I have a spot more of an idea about listed structures and the law etc than Bob has.

It needs working on to keep it operational. All structures and buildings need to be maintained. If Bob thinks it has been deteriorating over the past few years then I wonder why it had safety certs issued?

When listed it was operational - it would be interesting to take any failure to keep it thus to the courts, to see what would be decided about that, as it's such a one-off as a listed structure.

In the worst case scenario if it's allowed to deteriorate too badly the local authority can use its powers of compulsory purchase. Then it could be handed over to those willing to keep it as part of ths nation's heritage in the condition it deserves.

I agree painting with non-breathable paint was a very bad move. In itself Douglas Fir is a very long lasting wood. (there's plenty of pine lying around at Pleasureland...)

Anyhow, the pictures and text are about ready, thanks for the help, and it's now officially going on the national 'at risk' register.

In my opinion this would be the best outcome for the Scenic Railway- to be operated largely by volunteers along the lines of a preserved heritage railway, with the surrounding areas rented to ride operators on a long-term basis.

I'm sure there would be many people willing to pitch in and help with repairs, maintenance and cosmetic work required if the Scenic's future was assured.

People come from all over the world to ride on the Scenic Railway- there are an enormous number of riders who visit from Japan, where the ride has cult status. Marketed properly, Dreamland and the Scenic Railway have the potential to return a healthy return on any investment made in them.

It simply isn't acceptable to argue for the closure of Dreamland because "the land would be more profitable if developed as a supermarket"

We could say the same about Canterbury Cathedral.

Well at least we know Bob has not been away on an English course.

I guess he's a spotty teen who's got nothing better to do than pretend he's someone when he isn't.

Bob does not wind me up at all. It has become a sport on here, Bob bashing.

All he has to do to gain some respect is back up any of his claims and tell us who he is. The lack of this just piles on the evidence that he's a troll who has no connections and spouts junk.
